So... I hope that was supposed to be a "I'm Nou and I like to make the forums go" moment, and not an, "I'm Nou and I'm a self-centered little shit" moment. It's mother's day and he's your brother. F'real dude?

Anyways, The Great Gatsby is bad. Oh my. Leo did a pretty good job playing him, I think, but it didn't help when the entire rest of the movie was just kinda flapping around pointlessly in a haze of 3D and Moët placement.

Eh I didn't repeat it verbatim but it was more like he was asking me to go to lunch with him, even though I told him I was going down later for dinner.

I mean I didn't have a problem splitting it, but he always does this, he makes it sound like he is offering you a meal then he renegs at the last moment and is like "uh split the bill". I have paid for his meals a bunch of times, even went and bought him groceries when he was sick and only had like 10$.

Guess you have to know my brother a bit to get the attitude.

Same here. Apparently it's gotten very mixed reviews (Enydo says it sucks, some critic from the BBC said he liked it but it was far from a common opinion), so I assume it's, in the very least, original. I like it.

I enjoyed it. See it in 3D if possible.

In my experience, most people either love or hate Luhrmann films. I know a lot of critics disliked Gatsby, but, personally, I loved it.

Leo did a fantastic job of playing Gatsby, the vast majority of the other actors did stellar jobs, as well, it stayed pretty true to the book while clearly being an original telling, and, of course, it was so fucking beautiful.

Probably going to see it again next weekend, in 3D this time

I chuckled. Good find.

It's my favorite book, I'm kind of nervous.

My biggest issues were really the score, and Tobey Maguire as the narrator. The score was completely detracting, and while I get the point of trying to "modernize" the story, the score itself did the movie absolutely no favors.

See, I didn't find the score detracting in the latest. It's a movie about decadence, ostentation, and gaudiness (and obviously a ton of other things), and the soundtrack, to me, worked perfectly with that.

Also, as I told Kevin, I hate Tobey Maguire, but I also hate Nick Carraway, so he worked perfectly for me

Different strokes, I guess. I might just be overly critical, but damn. When the superimposed typewriter script started showing up I was like lololol.

Posted by enydo on May-13-2013 16:11:

Also, the car on the bridge with all black people partying with a crateful of Moet. LOL.

*shrug* everyone's got their own preferences. I went in wanting a beautifully shot Great Gatsby and that's exactly what I got.

That's the thing, I was laughing my ass off at this. Shit was hilarious, as was basically the whole first half of the movie, before shit got cereal.

The one thing I can say they nailed for SURE are the sets and the visuals. The whole green light and houses across the bay thing looked spectacular. I'm sure it looked even better in 3D since the movie was so painfully, obviously shot/edited to feature it.

I thought they nailed the casting as well. Leo just totally fits Gatsby in my mind: beautiful, suave, charming, and inherently disturbed and depressed.

Definitely looking forward to seeing it again, in 3D this time.

I dug this tbh:

Actually had not heard anything of hers other than the glut of remixes when Born To Die came out. Actually listened to the album today and I dug it. She can sing.

Love "National Anthem."

Posted by enydo on May-13-2013 23:47:

Does that song sound like it's sampling the strings from The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony, btw?

Posted by Vector A on May-13-2013 23:54:

The melodies are kind of similar anyway. The Verve track is actually sampled from an orchestral retake of a Rolling Stones song, so that would be a second-generation sample I guess.

bahahahahahahaha IT'S TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN, MAN

It might be just because I live in the area, but I think the Toronto Maple Leafs have the most deluded and obnoxious fans of any sports team in the world.
