Your question is quite vague, but here's some ideas:
To create a sample you'll either need some a microphone connected to something that can record, or you'll need a sound synthesis device (lots of software and hardware can make sounds... ;))
You can edit samples using software on your computer. Popular programs for the PC are Sound Forge, Wavelab, CoolEdit... there's many more than that though. |

What you probably want to do is use effects on it. If you don't understand how to do this, you have some fundamental things to learn before you get into this.
I would recommend picking up a copy of Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and playing with samples in there.
You may also want to pick up a copy of some music production software: Buzz (http://www.buzzmachines.com), Skale Tracker (http://www.skale.org), and Acid Xpress (http://www.acidplanet.com) are the only free ones I know of. You could also download demos of Fruity Loops or Cubase. There are some others out there, too, like Orion, Reason, Sonar, and Logic, but I'm not sure if they have demos.
Do a lot of reading. Pick up the book Sound Synthesis and Sampling, if you can.
I'm going by the assumption here that you want to do more than just take a sample and mess around with it -- that is, that you want to actually use it in some larger piece. |
