MARK "Chopper" Read has released an ultra-violent rap track detailing Melbourne's criminal underworld.
Machete, recorded with local rap artist Brad Strut, features Read busting a rhyme of murderous revenge and acknowledging his notorious status.
"Expanding the back of your brain as shells shatter/This ain't a movie/It's the real Chopper/Not Eric Bana," Read growls over tough hip hop beats.
The track, included on Obese City, a compilation of local rap artists, sees a four way royalty split between Read and his rap collaborators, Strut, Bias B and Balans.
Yesterday Strut, who wrote the track and coached Read's delivery, said he expects paltry dividends.
He confirmed receiving an advance payment from independent movie house Triple 3, which commissioned the track.
"There was definitely a generation gap in the studio," Strut said. "Chopper was raised on rock and we are straight-up hip hop.
"But we gave him a reference and he did pretty well with it."
Strut wrote lyrics based on Read's dark accounts of the underworld, then gave him three weeks to learn them.
"We let the instrumental run for 30 minutes and just tried to get as much out of him on beat and on time," he said.
"It was an interesting hook up - one of those propositions you couldn't say no to.
"Even if there is an element of gimmickry to it, it doesn't matter.
"It's something to tell the grandkids about in the future."
Read was open-minded about lyrics but refused to recite a Strut-composed line about rape.
"He was definitely uncomfortable about it, and we cut it," Strut said.
"I don't know if Chopper's getting moralistic in his old age.
"I just think he's a good-taste criminal."
Keep it real fools
