there is plenty of hockey out here, but you won't play against many aussies, but against ex-pat canadians, austrians, swedes and the like. Don't expect great facilities either, only 1 place even has glass over the boards that I know of in sydney. And make sure you bring your gear over cos it's hellish expensive here, I get my skates via mail order from america, cos it's about 1/3 the price even with the risk of a bad fit.
If you want to play serious, superleague takes in all the east coast cities, there's a few in-house comps going, and some nice regular pick-up games I enjoy whilst making the transition from in-line hockey. A lot of the canadians I used to play with gave up cos they didn't want pick-up type games, and couldn't be bothered training 2-3 nights weeks as well, and there's not a lot in between.
If you want more casual stuff, there's plenty of in-line, ranging from casual beginner friendly stuff up to pretty serious.
just remember though, not many cities in the world where you can surf in the morning, play hockey in the evening like you can here
