International Infiltration

I'm very interested in our country's history. In 1600-1700 we ruled the world's seas. We traded everywhere, bringing us welfare (Dutch painters, canals Amsterdam etc)

We were the only country allowed to trade with Japan. Why? Because Portugese also wanted to bring Catholicism. We Dutch didn't care about Japanese religion, we just wanted to make money.

All right, jp, you've awaken my Portuguese soul :D The fact is that the relationship between Portugal and Japan was based on culture. We taught them the latin alphabet, catholicism and how to say cool things like "Arigato" (it comes from Portuguese "obrigado", which means "thank you" - what else did you expect it to mean? :toothless). On the other hand, the good Japanese people told us how to eat with chopsticks and stuff :)

See? we got japanese food for free! You guys just got some useless thing called money :)

And I'm using "we/us" because, well, my greatgrandfather's father was Portuguese :D

Nagasaki opened trade with Portugal in 1571 and rapidly developed into a trading center. The Portuguese introduced a wide range of goods and technology, but were expelled from Japan in 1639 due to political and religious struggles. Only the Dutch and Chinese were allowed to remain under a tight policy of seclusion from 1641 to 1859.

The year 2000 marks the 400th anniversary of relations between Japan and Holland. The first Dutch ship arrived on Kyushu Island in 1600; an ongoing relationship started in 1609, when the Dutch established a trading post in Hirado in the northern part of Nagasaki. Thirty-two years later, the trading post was moved to the man-made island of Dejima in Nagasaki City, where it remained for more than 200 years as Japan's only window to the outside world during a period of national seclusion.
