Any tips on going broadband?

DJ Dowlz
Well I just got back home to Brissie and after 8 weeks on unlimited T3 (my connection at college) I'm just about dying here on 56k *boohoo*. So, I'm looking into some broadband options for the summer holz. Does anybody know what are some of the broadband services out there?

I had a look at iinet and it looks very tempting. Since currently I'm paying $20/month for a phone line and $30/month for internet, I could pay $10 extra a month (their $60 plan) and get 256kbit (is that 32k/sec?) and I get 1gig a month downloads. Plus there's the whole quiescent time (12-7am) and free downloads between state iinet users. The setup fee's $100 and the modem is $250.

Anybody know the other options? Telstra and optus seem to be ripping you off left right and centre, so I was planning to stick well away from them. Unless of course they have a decent plan?

Also, if anybody is on iinet, what's the speed like once you've reached your quota?

Dunno, I have Telstra and no problems but it is over $100 a month plus installation (which you can easily do yourself).

Hmmm, that's weird, cause I heard telstra was not the way to go right now?

Just a quick bit of research reveals:

Tel$tra Cable:
Setup:
3 month = $400
12 month = $260
18 month = $189
Pricing:
300mb unlimited/128k upload = $55
1gig unlimited/128k upload = $65
3gig unlimtied/128k upload = $88
[Extra Megs are approximately 10-15c]

Tel$tra ADSL:
Setup (self installation):
3 month = $300
12 month = $190
18 month = $130
Pricing:
300mb 256/64 = $60 (plan), $76 (no plan)
1gig 512/128 = $77 (plan), $94 (no plan)
3gig 512/128 = $95 (plan), $111 (no plan)
[Extra Megs are approximately 10-15c]

Optus Cable:
Setup:
$429 (unless you want to change over your phone bill)
Pricing:
550mb = $65
3gig = $78
[NB when you hit your quota speed is limited to 28k/sec]

Iinet ADSL:
Setup:
Line charge = $100
Modem = $250
Pricing:
300mb, 128/64 = $50
1gig, 256/64 = $60
2gig, 256/64 = $70
3gig, 512/128 = $80
[NB when you hit your quota, speed is limited to 56k/sec]

One thing I forgot to ask. With iinet, are you uploads counted to your transfer total?

Also, what's up with the blocking of the ports during bliink time?

Also, I noticed that you only get limited when you've exceeded your quota by the 22nd of the month. Does that mean you can go over your quota during the last couple of days of the month and not get limited in your speed?

Not sure about your specific questions, but I've heard that iiNet are probably the best ADSL providers around at the moment....

check the australian broadband forums for more info....
