Any tips on going broadband?

Hyperdimension
I've been on iiNet for a couple of months... what a 2 months it has been.

I'm on the 256/64 plan. My first few weeks were awesome, it was often going at full speed between 12am and 7am (Bliinktime), and I was getting almost 700MB per night - all free!

Then iiNet became increasingly popular, obviously because of the features of their product - no extra charges for excess data, and free downloads between 12am and 7am, which attracted the heavy downloaders (like myself). This slowed down Sydney traffic to a crawl, below modem speeds, and I was lucky to get more than 100MB during Bliinktime.

So I ended up just downloading during peak-time, and used up my quota pretty quickly, which means mytraffic got shaped until the end of the calendar month. Funnily enough, I could download more in volume, because I could then download continuously 24h/day at 56Kb/s speed. I get around 300MB to 400MB per day.

I think the problems are only isolated to the Eastern areas. WA is definitely OK. The iiNet whirlpool forum are awash with discussions/complaints/suggestions about Bliinktime, and I've even written a few lengthy posts. But a solution is coming within a week, it was announced by the director. I think it will be a system in which the heaviest downloaders will have their traffic shaped, determined dynamically based on data of a rolling period... something like Optus Netstats. I don't think there'll be hard limits, because iiNet wants to differentiate themselves from the crowd, and that is a great thing.

A great thing about iiNet is their customer relations. The director (Michael Malone) and quite a few of their support staff participate actively in the iiNet whirlpool forum. They do listen to what customers are saying in the forum.

I'm eager to see how it will be once the system is in place. Trials have been conducted in the past week, e.g. the top downloaders slowed down to 56Kb/s, and performance for everyone has improved greatly.

Though my traffic has been shaped for 3 weeks of this month... tonight it will become unshaped since it's now the beginning of the month.

If anyone's in Sydney and are thinking of getting onto ADSL (or changing providers), if you choose iiNet, you can transfer data freely between other iiNet users within the state, i.e. the data is not counted towards quota, disregardless of time of day. Upload is completely uncounted too. People on DC hubs have downloaded about 4GB this month from me.

Ive downloaded 13GB this month, that's with 3 of the weeks shaped at 56Kb/s.

Thanx for the info Hyperdimension! iinet seems to be a good way to head, since they simply limit your download speed when you hit your limit, not charge you for it like telstra does!

Still, does anyone have any experience of the ADSL companies which offer unlimited transfers which I mentioned above? (they're Hypermax, Tel Pacific and Archnet)
