365MAG INTERVIEW: EDX
Maurizio Colella also known as progressive house DJ/Producer EDX made his New York debut at Universal Carnival at Cielo presented by Mid-Atlantic Digital on Sunday November 15th, 2009. Although EDX is based out of Switzerland he arrived in New York from Miami, Florida where he was celebrating his birthday with friends as well as performing.
EDX was very enthusiastic about playing in New York and checking out club Cielo and he put on a marvelous show featuring many of his own productions that the fans attended to listen to live in person, as well as many other great tunes in the progressive house genre.
We met with EDX shortly prior to his performance for comment. Continue reading to see what he had to say.
Hello Maurizio, how are you?
Hi! How are you? I am doing well.
How was your flight?
It was good, it was not very far; only three hours coming from Miami.
Are you ready for your performance tonight?
Everything is good. I had dinner with friends so I am ready to perform now and see the club.
What are your impressions of Cielo so far, have you ever been there?
I've never been there. I have no impressions so far.
How do you feel about the New York nightlife scene and how does it compare to Switzerland?
As I understand it is completely different. We have one of the biggest club intensities in the world. We have about 300 clubs doing house music weekly. In New York there are not as many clubs into house music, there are may be three or four really good venues. There is Santos Party House, which I really like.
Do you have your own studio, and can you tell me about your equipment setup?
I've worked using Logic for about ten years. I mainly switched all of my peripherals to soft synths so I am not using many external machines.
How do you go about keeping your sound unique?
We are trying to keep the magic of the sound with our stamp by using the same system to develop the sound. Some people use a unique sound from a preset but we always try to have a balance in the layering of sounds. I think the magic in our sound is that we work with a lot of layers to create one sound.
Will there be any future collaboration with you along with DJ Tatana?
I've been her executive producer for ten years, so there will be new releases coming out that we will produce in our in-house studio.
Who are some artists that you enjoy listening to when you are not producing or performing?
I like music in general. Just good music, it depends on the mood, the place and with whom. I am open to all styles of music I am not saying that I like only Robbie Williams, or only Britney Spears, or even Beyonce, no no no I am more into street sounds like Jay-Z, maybe even 50Cent more. I am just into good music.
You celebrated your birthday a few weeks ago, did you do anything special for the occasion?
Once a year I celebrate my birthday and every year it is something special. I celebrated my birthday with my friends in Miami along with some friends from Europe. We had a great time, and it was a great week in Miami.
What are some of your goals for 2010?
Woah, so many goals! I want to try to work on an album and do some more remixes for some good artists and keep a profile strategy. There will be a few new remixes coming out in late 2009. Of course I plan to travel a lot and try to get into all the markets.
I noticed on your website it says “15 Years of House Culture” coming soon? Can you provide more insight on this project?
I have been working under the brand EDX for over 15 years and I stopped DJing like five years ago to focus on my work as label manager for Sirup Music in Switzerland and to handle more of the administration side. I decided to get back into music production. A lot of people don't know that I am behind certain projects. When I started to push the projects I kept it more discreet. Now there is a face behind the name and I need to update the website.
What are some of the latest developments at Sirup Music?
There are so many. We are releasing a lot of records under our sub-labels. We have a lot of label administration deals that we do together with our artists. The goal is to keep making good music and selling good music and making sure that all of our artists get exposure.
Are you working on any other exciting projects that you would like to share with us?
We are setting up and working on a new single. There will also be a new Chris Reece album along with another label that will be released approximately around the time of the Winter Music Conference. Many more releases. If you have ten labels you have about ten releases a month so you have around one hundred releases a year so there is always something going on.
Do you have anything else you would like to say to the readers of 365Mag?
Believe in the music, and believe in what you do and keep your focus straight.
I am looking forward to the gig tonight.
365Mag would like to thank EDX for his time and answers!

Those were just the opener questions to break the ice, however I do wish he was more direct and detailed with his answers further in the interview. |
