my CD drive (E:)is not recognizing when a cd is loaded.

I am unable to play cd's nor burn cd's.

any idea what may have caused that? is there any way to fix it?

the DVD drive (D:) works fine but i can't burn music to it.

people still have non DVD-R drives?

laser is probably out of alignment, replace that $10 cdr drive with a $30 dvdrw drive

...but if you're sure that's not the problem, then maybe try this:

If that doesn't work, is there any sign of life at all with the drive (indicator light, tray opens/closes)? If not, could be a disconnected cable or dead drive.

If so, try switching the drives. If your old drive comes alive but the other one is now dead, then it's probably not the drive but something further down the food chain...cable, motherboard, etc.

Billy, ditch optical media. It's ollllld. Seriously, why burn media anymore? Use solid state drives (thumb drives). Cheap, more reliable and not as taxing on the environment. :)
Nerologic
sometimes it could be a virus.

theres patches and virus that shut down laptop drives all the time, when its just a software error.

what kind of site have you been going on?

It's common for CDR/DVDR drives to basically stop being able to properly read or write discs. Laser cleaners typically don't help. We mowed through so many burners at my old job it wasn't funny. And it didn't matter the brand. Hell, the Sony drives (especially their DVD burners years back!) died far more than any of the others.

Just work on getting a DVDRW drive. You can get internal ones from Best Buy for under $60. A few to choose from usually. Or you can get an external drive (USB 2.0) so you can use it on any computer you want for under $70!

I use my 16GB thumb drive for moving files around between comptuers, but a DVDRW drive is definitely good for backing up some stuff or if you just want to burn files to a disc for someone.

reason i want it working is to play music in my car. i only have a basic cd player.

my computers pretty old, so i may just wait to get a new one when window 7 comes out (i'm not going to go with vista).

this or get a mac.

Ya can prob doing the little sign up thing and get a beta serial for Windows 7 though Microsoft MSDN or whateer

The RTM (released to manufacturers) code becomes available for TechNet/MSDN on August 6. This is the same code that will be pre-installed on machines (OEM) and stuff and the retail version released on October 22.

I believe the serial you get through MSDN expires in March, but I've already seen programs out there that basically fully activates the beta serial....so it doesn't expire.

Windows 7 is faaaaaaaaar superior to Vista...and finally a step up from Windows XP. I've been running W7 for awhile now. Just avoid using IE8 in it, cause it sucks. It crashes allllllllllll the time (as it does in XP and Vista ;p). But it might be Flash...cause it tends to crash on pages with Flash...oyhet times the browser will hault while the flash gets going...I've seen this same issue on multiple PCs.

So use FireFox and you'll be set. :p

W7 isn't perfect, but it's much much faster than Vista and faster than XP....even with the visual stuff in it.
