The plan was actually pretty simple… create the longest developed game in history that eventually is one of the greatest games ever made. You have the time to work on it properly (no ), so given the intelligence and talent of all the people involved, it was a pretty good bet. All 3DR had to do was make money on other stuff. All Epic had to do was open up a wide channel between the two companies. 3DR would serve as a research house for future Epic engine updates, but also give 3DR everything they did as well. The boots on the ground just had to keep the drum beating and keep the image of business as usual going. The truly hard to swallow part of this was some of us had to eventually leave, but we were guaranteed we’d be ok. All we had to do was let go of the idea of just making DNF in the traditional way… which I’m ashamed to admit was easier to let go of than I thought it would be.
In fact, with my role in this, I wouldn’t ever really work on the “real” DNF. That was a tough pill to swallow, but again the big picture looked good. |

From now on, I fear every child gamer who never had the experience of the Duke, will only take a game with regenerative health and awkwardly implemented multiplayer components as "acceptable." |
We have Halo 2 to thank for this trend. And from the looks of things, like you said, it has no sign of stopping. |

i do agree that is is pretty lame, i doubt a 7 year old today would have the patience or tenacity to get anywhere in one of the original mega man games!
but at the same time, regenerative health does lend itself to enjoying a game and not worrying constantly about health percentage, finding the next med kit and constant saving vs loading.
i HATE it when i find myself saving, loading, savingloading, just to make progress in a game with a story i am supposed to be involved in|
(but i just suck at games then i guess) |

Yeah, good points. I guess it just depends on the context of the game situation. For instance, in a single player game, yes, regenerative health might be more of a good thing since story progression is a much easier process than if you are constantly saving and reloading your game.
It just bothers me mainly with multiplayer, and how people can be bitches and run away and hide all the time, yet still be awesome at the game because their health comes back. It doesn't kill the game experience, but those adrenaline-pumping times of having to sneak around because you have 1 health bar left are gone forever in lieu of this new trend.
Also, I would love to see an average, young gamer even ATTEMPT a Mega Man game...did you try out Mega Man 9? Released last year, an entirely new Mega Man game, but it was created exactly like the old ones. Hard as , too. Not enough hard games these days.

Didn't you post this pic in another thread at one point? Either way, it appears the game DID get released, and nobody noticed! San Diego just didn't let the word out. :p |

| At least RTS games are (for the time being) dramatically superior for the PC, eh? |

Yes, this genre will never be touched due to the mouse and keyboard.
Then again, I wonder what an RTS is like on the Wii? That wiimote might make things pretty easy to control. But still, you've only got a 1 or 2 buttons to play with on that one...keyboard and mouse can never be beat. |
