I'm sure many of you in this forum are Sega heads like me, having the deepest of respect for the Genesis, the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Hell, some of us were even down with the Sega CD, or the 32X...and me, the Game Gear. I was one of the few that stuck up for that handheld and its superiority over the Game Boy. Alas, my efforts were in vain.
Anyways, IGN just published an article outlining literally every bit of history concerning the company of Sega, from it's birth, all the way to present day. The article is long - 11 pages - but it's a great read, and I implore all gamers that have even the slightest of interest in Sega to read through it. Some of this stuff is mindblowing and poses a lot of "What if?" questions.

Some of the bigger tidbits include:
-The Playstation was originally supposed to be a joint venture between Sony and Sega. After Nintendo pulled the plug on this SNES CD add-on (then called the Play Station), Sony looked towards Sega for partnership. That's right...it was almost called the Sega Playstation.
-The same graphics chip used in the Nintendo 64 was originally meant for the Saturn. But Sega of Japan did not like the proposed architecture required to make it all work. That company that built the chip made a trip up to Nintendo of America, and sold it to them. Imagine that: N64 hardware with CD media. The fate of the Saturn would have been much different.
-EA would have developed for the Dreamcast had Sega not purchased Visual Concepts (the company behind NFL2K and NBA2K). EA demanded they have sports exclusivity with the system, but since Sega had already made that purchase in the name of $10 million, they were unwilling to cooperate with that request. Many claim that it was EA's non-involvement in the Dreamcast that killed the console.
That's just the tip of the iceberg...a lot of other interested stuff in there that you all should read. |
