I talk to alot of you separately and keep hearing complaints about no regular place to hear trance.. over and over I hear that. Yes, there are a few reason why the past nights no longer happen, and why the city has moved to electro as the main sound. But in the end, its about just getting out and making it happen.
Some of you guys should get together and just make some events happen.. even just 20-100 people midweek shows.
you guys should do it, that's how most of those nights years ago came together... |

Arpy we have tried here and there..but good luck even bringing out 70 people to even break even a semi-low budget show...unless everybody supports it 100%

naz, you've tried more than anyone. it's time for more people to get involved and help
you've done great things bringing out of town dj's, but a scene is built on its locals. maybe just grab every trance dj on this board and start a monthly.... that way no one loses money and it could turn into something bigger if it all works out and you're showcasing the vancouver talent
between naz, mark, marty, danny and a few more of the people on this board i'm sure you can get some good shows together. if you need help with venues, getting cheap promo, ideas.. just ask |

There are a few quality prog-trance/trance locals, and I mean quality. The problem has always been finding a venue willing to take the risk, and not just any venue but a decent one, and a risk beyond one or two shows but say a 6 month to a year period, to allow a team to build a fanbase.
Once you've got a weekly or monthly following going, you can start building up ticket costs to put enough aside to book out of town guys. Between the guys you mentioned Naz and Arpy, they have a blackbook list of DJs, big and small from out of town that would kill to come here and at cheap prices. It's just never been cost effective and they've never had a venue to do it.
It's also difficult with the way music taste has changed, as it always does. You can argue the quality and personal preference until the cows come home, but it really is about the hard trance/hard house for the younger audiences (raves), and house music for everyone else. Vancouver never has and never will have a strong EDM following (which arguably is for the better as Vancouver really is just another sheep in terms of music, look at how radios handle top 40, playing the same song until it bleeds out your ears daily). House music is the closest thing to what people are used to and like dancing to, whether its good or ty selections, its what it is.
Lastly, I'm not just talking about this because of the opportunity I got, but I can appreciate what Ross is trying to do in the backroom at the Redroom. Believe has been hosting Saturdays there for as long as I know, and having Ross run his thing in the backroom has worked out. He's booking guys like Adam and Sean and others who can come in and bring something different. Good house, danceable progressive and a bit of trance. There are others as well that still get the odd gig like Zero D and Aqvayak, but those are few and far between. I can't speak for what Tristan's playing anymore, and Danny gets few and far between bookings as well.
As you guys said, just find a small place, like a community hall or a small venue or a backroom and start something small, charge cheap just to cover costs or work some arrangement with management and keep it consistent, not just the quality of music and style but in its regularity of happening. Go from there. |

I tried Organix for the first time this friday... I love love love goa and psy, but I don't think I can handle it or dance to it for long periods of time.
Haven't made it down to the Red Room on a saturday yet but I've heard Ross's radio show a bunch. Vancouver is a bit of a depressing city at times but it seems to me like all the elements are here, they just haven't come together yet. |
