Bars And Clubs Feeling A Similar Pinch With Slumping Economy

At a time when people are seeking social distractions more than ever, the cruel irony is many suddenly can't afford them.

That's the reality faced by those who make nightlife their business in Toronto and aboard, and a quick survey of some of the lines - or lack thereof - in Hogtown's Entertainment District Friday night was proof enough.

"I think business has gone down all the way around, I think people are a little bit scared," admitted Jimmy Kambourakis, owner of upscale spot This Is London.

Of course, as Kambourakis also pointed out, January is always a slow time for drinking establishments, with more choosing to stay in and hibernate.

The hope though, is that the economy doesn't stay in its slumber when spring has finally sprung. The fear is it almost certainly will.

"Tough times are coming and we are concerned because I don't know how it's going to pan out in the next couple of months," said Joanne Dionisopoulos, who owns John Street's Club Lucky.

She's not alone, but others say it may not be time to hit the panic button just yet.

"At this point we're cautiously watching and waiting, obviously it's a concern to everybody," insisted Janice Solomon of the Entertainment District BIA.

But at least one owner, Hotel Boutique Lounge's Krystian Catala, put a brighter spin on things.

"People drink when they're happy and they drink when they're depressed," he said. "So I guess we're in a good business."

And there's one more bit of silver lining.

Torontonightclub.com says partiers can expect reduced covers and creative promotions in the months to come as owners try to get people back in line.

Haha these articles are the best.

Starting from the title,

Well, umm, why wouldn't they? I've seen so many similar-titled articles in the news already. They're a business just like any other. If life sucks for every business out there right now, why should bars be exempted from economic misery? I don't think anyone would be surprised by this - "Oh wow, when people are broke they don't go out drinking as much?! me!"

And on to the very first sentence,

quote:

I think the author (who is it anyway?) is speaking for himself/herself there. Seeking social distractions? Seeking jobs, perhaps. And then this not-being-able-to-afford-to-go-out is ironic? How? Perhaps Alanis Morisette is the author.

blah blah more of the same we've been hearing every day about our ty economy, except this time it's from the bar/club owners.

While this is true, when people are broke and depressed, they are less likely to go to bars where one drink costs $5 plus tip, and more likely to go to the LCBO and then find a bench in the park.

Clubs have been on a downturn for a couple of years now.

It has more to do with:

a) the smoking laws
b) The overly aggressive police force
c) Fewer and more expensive parking space
d) fewer nightclubs as a result of political pressure being levied in part by utilizing the AGCO
e) negative and biased media stories about clubs

The economic downturn is just salt in the wound as far as im concerned.
