Conspiracy Theories / Noids in General

I was talking to this guy about gmail, and he told me he doesn't really trust it because of AdSense, claiming someone could read his e-mails and edit the adverts that showed up. Happy that AdSense passed a somewhat awkward Turing Test, I told him it was just the work of a few lines of code that were as conscious as an apple, without any human intervention whatsoever. Then he told me there was a master key that could open all e-mail accounts, and he saw a professor in college gaining access to e-mail addresses in random webmail services - turns out, this "master key" was just a bunch of SQL Injection techniques, and the websites had a poor security system. The guy was 100% sure that Google wanted to control his life. Come to think of it, that wouldn't be a bad thing at all - I could use some help finding my socks :p

But, it astonishes me how often people think there's a conspiracy even in the smallest things. To my grandma, every little thing that happened in Brazilian politics, for example, was planned by "Castro's thread" (she couldn't say "Fidel Castro", so she just said "Fio do Castro" instead, which is Portuguese for "Castro's thread"). A friend of mine in high school thought his religion was going to be persecuted by all major religions every following week (his plans were simply awesome though, he should've written a book). And, yesterday I heard a guy in the shopping mall rambling how Russia was the only nation fighting the New World Order (which, come to think of it, wouldn't be a bad thing at all either - travelling abroad wouldn't be such a pain in the arse :D).

Why do people need to believe everything in their life is connected and part of some kind of master plan?

I'm afraid there isn't much to be discussed, and this is clearly just a rant. But, if you want to give your two cents, or claim that Fanta is an anti-semitic soft drink, this thread is all yours :)

Maybe life is more interesting if you make up grand stories about it instead of spending all your time dealing with the more mundane people and events as they come to you. People are vain. They tend to believe that everyone else is thinking about them, or at least that they ought to be. They want to believe that their lives are at the center of some big story, and if no one provides a story for them, then they'll tell one to themselves.

I once had a co-worker who was certain that;

-A U.S. invasion of canada was imminent (for natural ressources)
-A U.S. invasion of europe would soon follow
-9-11 was government-orchestrated and central to the above plots
-Key members of the liberal government (in power at the time) were in on the plot. (he was a hardcore separatist)

The work shifts were long.

People feel a need to be on the outside looking in, as if they're part of those 'in the know' and everyone else have been suckered.

Needless to say they should have all been aborted.

And the UN is coming to take our guns with their massive one world army. Led by Sauron.
