Update: Islamic Society baffled by incident at worship service

By Kyle Nagel

DAYTON — Baboucarr Njie was preparing for his prayer session Friday night, Sept. 26, when he heard children in the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton coughing. Soon, Njie himself was overcome with fits of coughing and, like the rest of those in the building, headed for the doors.

"I would stay outside for a minute, then go back in, there were a lot of kids," Njie said. "My throat is still itchy, I need to get some milk."

Njie was one of several affected when a suspected chemical irritant was sprayed into the mosque at 26 Josie St., bringing Dayton police, fire and hazardous material personnel to the building at 9:48 p.m.

Someone "sprayed an irritant into the mosque," Dayton fire District Chief Vince Wiley said, noting that fire investigators believe it was a hand-held spray can.

According to fire dispatch communications, a child reported seeing two men with a white can spraying something into a window. That child was brought to the supervising firefighter at the scene.

Wiley would not discuss that report, but said the investigation has been turned over to police. Police were not commenting.

The 300 or so inside were celebrating the last 10 days of Ramadan with dinner and a prayer session, but the prayer session was interrupted so those suffering from tearing, coughing and shortness of breath could receive treatment.

Wiley said an adult and juvenile were taken to area hospitals and others had their eyes or faces washed on the scene. He did not know how many people were treated at the scene.

Ismail Gula, ISGD secretary, said people were praying during the weekly service when some in the audience began to cough and experience breathing troubles, then left the building. Once outside, several of them called 911, Gula said.

Tarek Sabagh, a member of the ISGD board, wasn't present when the incident occurred.

He said his daughter called and told him to stay away because of the possibility of remaining fumes. Sabagh arrived shortly after and watched from the mosque's steps as members were allowed back inside about 11 p.m. to collect belongings.

"It's very disturbing," Sabagh said. "Something like this has never happened before."

Sabagh said members moved to a Beavercreek school to finish their prayer session as police continued to investigate.

"I don't know if people will have the feeling of trust to come back tomorrow or next week or next month," Sabagh said. "I don't know how people will feel."

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. During the month, Muslims fast (do not eat) from sunrise to sunset. In the evening and in the morning before the sun comes up, they eat small meals. During this month, they take extra time for family, inner reflection, and spiritual growth.

Muslim Children Gassed at Dayton Mosque After "Obsession" DVD Hits Ohio
by Chris Rodda
Sun Sep 28, 2008 at 08:50:29 PM PDT

(From the diaries -- kos)

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. This, apparently, is what the scare tactic political campaigning of John McCain's supporters has led to -- Americans perpetrating a terrorist attack against innocent children on American soil.

I read the story as reported by the Dayton Daily News, but this was after I had received an email written by a friend of some of the victims of these American terrorists. The matter of fact news report in the Dayton paper didn't come close to conveying the horrific impact of this unthinkable act like the email I had just read, so I asked the email's author for permission to share what they had written. The author was with one of the families from the mosque -- a mother and two of the small children who were in the room that was gassed -- the day after the attack occurred.

"She told me that the gas was sprayed into the room where the babies and children were being kept while their mothers prayed together their Ramadan prayers. Panicked mothers ran for their babies, crying for their children so they could flee from the gas that was burning their eyes and throats and lungs. She grabbed her youngest in her arms and grabbed the hand of her other daughter, moving with the others to exit the building and the irritating substance there.

"The paramedic said the young one was in shock, and gave her oxygen to help her breathe. The child couldn't stop sobbing.

"This didn't happen in some far away place -- but right here in Dayton, and to my friends. Many of the Iraqi refugees were praying together at the Mosque Friday evening. People that I know and love.

"I am hurt and angry. I tell her this is NOT America. She tells me this is not Heaven or Hell -- there are good and bad people everywhere.

"She tells me that her daughters slept with her last night, the little one in her arms and sobbing throughout the night. She tells me she is afraid, and will never return to the mosque, and I wonder what kind of country is this where people have to fear attending their place of worship?

"The children come into the room, and tell me they want to leave America and return to Syria, where they had fled to from Iraq. They say they like me, ... , and other American friends -- but they are too afraid and want to leave. Should a 6 and 7 year old even have to contemplate the safety of their living situation?

"Did the anti-Muslim video circulating in the area have something to do with this incident, or is that just a bizarre coincidence? Who attacks women and children?

"What am I supposed to say to them? My words can't keep them safe from what is nothing less than terrorism, American style. Isn't losing loved ones, their homes, jobs, possessions and homeland enough? Is there no place where they can be safe?

"She didn't want me to leave her tonight, but it was after midnight, and I needed to get home and write this to my friends. Tell me -- tell me -- what am I supposed to say to them?"

When acting as a representative of Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), the 501(c)3 non-profit organization that I work for, I cannot engage in political activities. The distribution of Obsession, however, although a political campaign scheme, clearly crosses over into the mission of MRFF. So, I'm going to make two statements here -- one in my capacity as MRFF's Research Director, and another as an individual whose disgust at the vile campaign tactics of John McCain's supporters completely boiled over when I opened up the email about children being gassed.

My statement as MRFF's Research Director:

The presidential campaign edition of the Obsession DVD, currently being distributed by the Clarion Fund, carries the endorsement of the chair of the counter-terrorism department of the U.S. Naval War College, using the name and authority of an official U.S. military institution not only to validate an attack the religion of Islam, but to influence a political campaign. For these reasons, this endorsement has been included in MRFF's second lawsuit against the Department of Defense, which was filed on September 25 in the Federal District Court in Kansas.

My opinion as an individual and thoroughly appalled human being:

John McCain has a moral obligation to publicly censure the Clarion Fund, the organization that produced Obsession and is distributing the DVDs; to denounce the inflammatory, anti-Muslim message of Obsession; and to do everything in his power to stop any further campaign activities by his supporters that have the potential to incite violence.

The only sad thing apart from the obvious is that I'm not surprised. I've had knives pulled on me before, and had to defend myself from multiple attackers in physical confrontations, that I never initiated of course. The most fundamental principle any martial artists with a sense of honor should follow is never resorting to the unjustified use of force. That goes well beyond exercising a constitutional right to free speech, something I don't believe the state should have any right to legally limit in any case. But since the demographic is not Jewish, Black, or Homosexual, the phenomenological and ethical implications are conveniently ignored or marginalized. Clearly we live in a tolerant society and culture eh? Just another hallmark of a "single standard" and how 'civilized' we are.

please....bull happens everywhere. It sucks, but the actions of two douche bags in ohio shouldn't make you ashamed of your country. What you should be proud of is the fact that police are actually looking for these scum bags and if caught they will probably go to jail. If this happened to christians in muslim parts of the world i'm sure justice would be all but forgotten.

it was probably this or someone like him.

Sadly, discrimination, xenophobia and similar things are not exclusive to USA. It happens in other parts of the world, in Russia, European countries, and I am sure it happens in other places - it even happens in Africa (recall the recent violence in South Africa?). Its a problem with us humans. Its just things like these are more prevalent in some places than others, based on social, political and education status and levels.

Nationalistic sentiments and identities is something I never considered to make any sense ever. As I increasingly became more "left wing" and anarchist in my political views, another concept that made less sense was patriotism. I can't see the term independently having any meaning in the absence of the institution of state; patriotism is the "love for your country," which becomes kind of to make sense of. The definition of the key term 'country' is up for questioning if there is no state. IMO, that obfuscates the idea itself and brings in to question yet the significance of another layer of unnecessary and arbitrary separatist identity. Being reduced to a social construct specific with respect to era and location, it follows that dismissing it is probably a desirable choice in, given an interest in the promotion of rational thought is a valued premise.

Nonetheless, I still personally think patriotism makes a lot more sense that nationalism and isn't devoid of pragmatic benefits. They're just specific to the population within the limits of an arbitrary geographical division.

Plus, the actions of a fractional minority does not logically imply anything about anyone else who isn't already member of that subset, making generalizations not only unfair but potentially dangerous as well... being incidents specific to certain places and people... so the probability of it happening really depends on where you are. I wouldn't necessarily disclude the possibility of it happening else where though; the rising statistical frequency of annual occurrences and rising percentages is, which we can hopefully agree on, undesirable and somewhat disturbing. If for no other reason than at least one purely obvious one, individual self preservation.

EDIT: Regardless, I still think despite ethnicity, religion, ideological perspectives, sexuality or gender, it makes perfect sense to carry legally permissible weapons for self protection should you ever need one. Note, they don't have to be lethal, but it can make them less effective. I also think it's in the interest of any individual to have some kind of martial arts training, which I highly recommend. It can get you out of a lot of , even in situation devoid of actual physical confrontations ;). Speaking of which, I have to leave for kung fu but the comments so far have certainly been interesting in this thread, wouldn't mind reading some more :).

You are right to a point, but the act along with the distributuion of such fear/hate brought on by a politicle party should be weighed into the act as well...
