So I've been thinking that I want to try my hand at stand-up comedy. Have any other c0rwhores attempted it? If so, any words of advice?
I mean, not bragging or anything, I consider myself pretty funny, however, a lot of it is riffing off of other people when we're having a conversation. I take something they say that isn't really funny, and I make a goofy-ass observation on that. Writing just straight up jokes is a lot harder. I've written one about having sex with a bald eagle since they took it off of the endangered species list, but it's just tough to do. Then again, I've been at it for less than a day.

We go to a different bar after our baseball game cuz the other one was packed, and it was open mike night. I went up for about 15 minutes, with most of the content of an essay I wrote for a creative writing class and my experiences and observations while working at a large amusement park for a few summers. It went very well, nice applause and not one boo or heckler.
It shure helped haveing a few beers before going up to the mike, I wouldn't have had the willpower to do it otherwise.

I tried it once - and only once - in the 90's upon continued encouragement from friends. I'll just say it was a very humbling experience and it caused me to have so so so so so much respect for people who do it for a living.

Dude, i am a pretty hilarious guy from what most of my friends tell me, but there is no way i would be funny as a comedian. Its completely different from being funny.

I think I'm decently funny. But in a mitch hedberg kind of way. Just because I say things ...weird

sadly you'll never find out exactly how unfunny you are until you're on stage at an amateur night...

not as easy as you think that's all i have to say.
look up local comedy clubs. they'll usually have open mike nights. there's at least 5 in baltimore that have it on random nights - comedy is big here. you'll usually get anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. this is how most people start off. if that works out a club might sign you on to open for someone - usually 15 mins to 30 mins at most. that's a way to get discovered. a lot of times agents will be in the crowd or at least people in the know.
you have to work really hard and know your routine flawlessly. it's very easy to up. if you stumble around or forget something or generally have a lot of pauses - the audience doesn't have patience for it. you have to be a good public speaker (not always but it helps) in order to become a good comedian.
having said all that - there's different paths for everyone and certainly i might not know . but that's the advice i've been given by some people i've acted with that have done comedy before. i was thinking of diving into it one of these days just to try it out.

Unless you're hilarious as hell when you're around people and are an alcoholic, do drugs, suffer from low self-esteem, depression and masturbate in your own feces when you're alone...you don't have a chance. :p
