Whenever I listen to an essential mix or, more so, a mix cd, there's always, at least, three tracks that I dig so much I'll go and shop on beatport, audiojelly, dancerecords, or the label, etc.

Now, when I listen to the preview, the song (not always, but a good number of times) sounds ty compared to the version (or edit, or whatever) I heard in the mix cd/radio show.

Latest example: Marco da Mata & Elle - Circling Dub

Long-standing example that I've tried recreating, Jake Fairley - Oshawa.

well samples inherently suck and are misleading. Sometimes they sound brighter, sometimes they sound darker than the real thing. That's why you should try to sample in multiple locations to get a fair view of what a song really sounds like before u buy.

Trust me, I wouldn't have made this thread if I hadn't done that. And, believe you me, I've listened to my latest "search" thoroughly, and the track, as opposed to Matthew Dear's set, is structured way differently, weak instruments (probably EQ; but hardly the case), etc. I will admit, though, that if you speed it up to the set's tempo, it'll have a spark of that set's fire. Still, it's unmatched.

But, yeah, I'm just ranting because it's happened to me several times. Nothing against the set, though; Matthew Dear's mix rocks. :D

its called layering.

you need to learn how to do that yourself or live with set rips.

What exactly do you mean "layering?"
elFreak
he is mixing other elements into the track.

ya I'm not sure what you mean by that.

But RJ I think I know what you're referring to...basically a track sounding better out of a live mix than it does when you finally get it. A lot of it has to do with your brain remembering every single detail about the track (eq levels, speed, pitch). So you get to a point where you dont want to hear that track any other way.

Then u get the vinyl and find out that its 3bpm slower and the dj had it pitched up and it kinda throws you off...nothing sounds "right"

I had the impression that, perhaps, they import the original song into a program/sequencer and "buff" it up. Sometimes, though, on the tracklists for these sets/mix cd's, there's no indication of an Edit or something to that effect.

But, whatever, I'll continue trying to "recreate" the original songs to their set counterparts.

it can be done live pretty easily even without the aid of software. ;)

Haha, that option pretty much goes out the window for me since I sold my Pioneer CDJs for extra money to move here in Syracuse.

Oh well.

I wouldn't say easily, but it's doable.
