How fast are your eyes?

Haha, we had this in one of our modules and we had to replay it thrice to believe that we didn't see it the first time :D

Haha,a now classic psychological experiment.

It has nothing to do with "self-awareness" though, its about the phenomenon of "Inattentional Blindness" (Irvin and Rock) and hence the limitations of attention. Because attentional resources are limited, the processing of information must be selective, and hence, the allocation (focusing) of attentional resources are inversely related to the probability of detecting an environmental change (unless this change exceeds a certain threshold). As a result, people who do not detect this change are "blind" to it, and because they are "blind" to it due to their limitations of attention, they exhibit "inattentional blindness". Most of individuals would exhibit this behaviour (unless one is experienced or knowledgable of experimental content.)

Another one is "Change Blindness", in which individuals fail to detect changes in a scene, due to a change in the scene itself or when the scene's changes occur during the individuals eye-movements (saccades). "Change Blindness" may be related to "inattentional blindness", but what distinquishes the two is that "change blindness" requires a comparison of the present scene with the (before-it-changes) scene's representation in memory. So "change blindness" could be related to both attentional and (short-term ) memory limitations. Here's a typical example of "change blindness".

great post petran.

I remember seeing that before and I couldn't believe I missed it. It's so obvious the second time.

That second video is even simpler yet still cool. I had to rewind it back and forth to see what changed.

Not fun, I knew what to expect :(

I hoped they'd have the bear walk across the screen and then ask something completely unrelated, like "how many players were wearing caps?" or something.

Anyway, Petran, the video you posted really got me, it took me a while to realise the island had moved.
