Believe it or not I just felt the urge to start watching the series two days ago and now I'm completely in love; I've been watching nonstop. This is what anime should be all about, amazing storyline ,fight scenes and animation. It was definitely years ahead of it's time when it come out.

Wait till you get to the last two episodes, wonder if your still gonna love it. Also its being redone for a third or fourth time now i think. There would be no need for that if it was done correctly in the first place. Totally overrated imo.
Also Shinji is the most annoying main character ever. Ok so not every main character can be as awesome as rambo, im not asking for that, but this guy just makes you want to strangle him.

always wondered about it, but never gotten around to watching it. mostly coz japanese anime plots just get too stupid.

It's not too bad, but damn, the ending is nuts. Could be bull, but I read somewhere that the final episode was essentially the creator/writer/whatever trying to talk about his mental breakdown or something.
It was so random, and such a finale.
Edit: And yes, I want to punch Shinji.

lol just finished watching the series now I'm watching death and rebirth.
Yeh it's deff not for everyone especially those last two episodes, but I must say yes, I did appreciate the last two episodes along with the whole series. It got so deep and confusing as it got to the end and it all came together rather surprisingly and unexpectedly. I must admit I didn't enjoy most of the psychological self-warfare dialog of the characters and all the repetitive flashbacks but it all added to the dynamics of the show. I love the experimentalism and the writing and how it sets itself apart from the superficial. The spontaneous, constant change of mood in the series just left me on the edge all the way.
I was a little turned off with the "homosexual" aspect between Shinji and Kaworu but that feelings went away once I found out he was an angel and then Shinji killed him. I saw it as a "love" from being to being. I was more like a friendship love rather than in a romantic context unlike most thought. Plus Shinji had never had someone show any honest care for him so it was logical for him to feel appreciated and retribute Kaworu with the same feeling.
I also love the fact that Anno left the series with immense open endings and stated that viewers must find out answers on their own.

As for Shinji been a poor main character I somewhat agree but I understand why he was portrayed as a week charactered boy. Had Shiji had a strong defined character many people would not relate, which I think is the main focus of this series.
I can totally understand your/the point(s) of view with the series and why MANY people dislike the sudden twist and felt disappointed. It is definitly not for everyone and it's VERY trippy but I was really fond of it and appreciate it a lot.
It's deep,deep stuff...

Watching dubbed anime is a serious sin. It should only be watched in original japanese with subtitles. Anything else is just blasphemy really.

Shinji redeemed himself in my eyes when he gave Asuka a pearl necklace. It was so random, heh.
edit: Oh, and Rei is way more annoying than Shinji.

Its been years since i watched this so i dont remember that well anymore but was this before or after he jerked off on her face? Even so, one act of niceness doesn't atone for all the crap he did previously.
And even though she did basically kill everyone in EoE, Rei is still not as deserving of a punch in the face as Shinji.
