As far as my knowledge takes me, all you need to know is that
1. the headshell is that black plastic thing you fix onto your tonearm to protect your carts
2. carts are that small tiny piece of audio equipment you mount onto the headshell, and
3. needles appear just below the cart and it's barely noticeable unless you really try and spot it.
I think a stylus is just another name for a cart, but I could be wrong. :) I don't really give that much attention to labelling and names.
Correct me if I'm wrong, someone. :) |

Not quite... the needle is the actual needle, the metal bit. The stylus is the needle AND the plastic bit that surrounds it. Not the whole cartridge itself, but the bit that detatches from the cartridge. |

| That's what I ment. Thanks for being specific though. I didn't think you could take the needle out of the plastic part, so it's the same thing to me :) |

there are two types of cartridges: those which can be mounted directly on the tonearm (like Ortofon Concordes or Stanton Trackmasters) - those do not need a headshell. And there are (like Stanton 500 AL II) those, which do. Headshell is used to mount those types of cartridges: first you mount headshell on the tonearm, then cartridge - on the headshell.
the difference between stylus and needle was already explained. |

the best cartridges for djing - Ortofon Concorde Nightclub - don't need a headshell at all:) |

| just buy the Stanton 500 AL II, you don't need better actually (you are a starter, isn't it), these one are really good for a cheap price. You could buy some better, but why? they are just more expensive and you don't need the extra groove some needles have or things like that |
