Seriously? But the shadiness is an essential element of the surreal afterhours experience! At Spring4th you've got the questionable legality of the venue, the overpriced cover, "free" whiskey and rum (?!) concoctions, somewhat zombielike patrons, the cumulative effects of total exhaustion and 4+ hours of drinking, subtle Ron Paul propaganda on the walls (what the hell?), extreme tests of endurance, and a constantly shapeshifting venue, apparently (I could have sworn that Spring4th looked totally different last time I was there. What's with that?).

Due to these factors an afterhours night is reliably epic as you declare your victory at the sight of dawn. Unfortunately, I only survived until about 5:00am. :(

Oh, and the Gabriel set was pretty sweet, though I gotta admit with shame I didn't really recognize most of it (except, say, Tracking Treasure Down). Also, Swerve really needs speakers outside.

Unfortunately, this city has strict laws when it comes to music being played outdoors. I made the same comment when I played at Luckie Lounge on NYE. They installed a speaker system on the rooftop patio, but the city made them turn it down to the point that it was almost inaudible.

I initially assumed that was the reason, but then I remembered that Opera placed a fairly massive sound system outside -- so I was wondering why Swerve couldn't do the same. Too many residences nearby?

Something to do with zoning perhaps? That area is like club row.

When Luke Fair played outside at Opera a couple of years ago, they turned him down to where the only people that could hear him were whoring his monitors.

And yeah, I'm serious. I'm just not a party animal. I'm not built for afterhours. Did have a good time last night though.
