| I am a DJ just starting to break out and I have invested in the sound/DJ equip nessasary to perform the quality mixes demanded by clubbers. Now that I have my sound/DJ gear in order I am looking heavily into QUALITY lighting. Some of the best club lighting comes from a distributer called Martin Lighting. IMO they are the best. Now what I wanted to know from the clubgoers is what you would like to see more of when you go clubbing, other that more naked/hotter women, cause I cant provide that, but I like to think my music would help get them clothes off...even a bit, lol. Okay so I got off track a little, but anyway if you go to www.martin.com and check out scanners (SCX 700 and SCX 800) does this float your boat. Or moving heads (smartMAC, 250). These lights can get very expensive, especially for me as my main income is a tradesman. But I have found that most clubs lack quality lighting and abundance of lighting as compared to other markets like Montreal or even Europe. I am somewhat infactuated with the european style market and desperately want to see it here in Vancouver. I know its a small step but its a nessasary one in my mind to improve the entertainment and show quality of clubs - especially when 2010 is around the corner - the world is coming and they are gonna need a place to party, and I am trying to see what they/you may be most interested in. Is it high quality optics or quantity of lights? Cooler patterns/more advanced patterns coming out of lights and projecting into your eyes or on the ground? Lasers? Multi-color lasers? Colored strobes as compared to standared white? HiDef screen projection/graphics? Better syncronized graphics or syncronized lighting to music? Do you care or are you satisfied with what you see and alerady got? Any feedback is taken into consideration as I am trying to figure out what you people want. As you are my future clients your opinion matters to me. And why would a DJ be intersested in expanding the entertainment/show quality part of the club when his only job is to spin records, pack his stuff and leave? Well for (1) Because you wont do it. (2) Because the clubs are pretty lame and cheap around here (comparitive to to other markets) IMO. (3) Cause the city deserves a much better club/show experience. (4) Lighting is a passion of mine, just as much as the music itself. (5) Music and lighting work together to create sensations...foe example you could have the best mixing skills in the world with a monster tracklist, but be spinning in a dark room with a few fixtures about and no one would really be moved by the effort or...visa versa...sick light show but lame mixing/track selection. Iguess this was all inspired by positive and negative situations. Positive - Tiesto in Concert Vancouver or and Elements of Life productions around the globe, Trance Energy, Sensation, euro clubs. Negative - time after time I ahve seen big name DJ's com to Vancouver like Armin and Sander specifically. I remember when AvB would come to plush and the ticket price would start at 50 bucks and the production quality would not justify the ticket price, AvB was always good but remember I am not knockin his performance, I am knocking the clubs part in providing a bigger better "stage" for at the time was the worlds #2 DJ. And then when SvD come to Cyber...do I even need to go into that, he was amazing but the show was a mockery to the talent level of SvD (prob hottest growing DJ) and EDM music itself - which is music + production + lighting = trance(EDM) music experience. So in saying all of that I am not mad at these cubs so mush as sick and tired of not giving the top DJ's or up and coming DJ's the show they deserve or should be performing on. What do you think? |

i dont really pay attention to lighting.. i think the money is better spent elsewhere, ie lowering ticket costs, improving the sound system and hiring hot naked chicks to dance.
Celeb's lighting is quite good imo compared to anywhere else in the city and does alot to the atmosphere there but for a club of Plushes size for example it would be too big of an investment. Cyber is a joke, i think proper lighting is the last thing on their minds as far as upgrades are concerned - most DJ's and partiers there would be happy just being there for once with out the sound system ing up. |

Not bad feedback, kinda hope it gets better though, kinda hard to narrow down my choices, which was the point of this thread. There will be an investement in lights - I'm just not 100% sure what ya want...
The lowering in ticket costs is a great idea, I think that the clubs charge way too much around here, especially for what you get back. But as far as lighting goes, I have stated already that the music + atmosphere(especially lighting) go hand in hand to create the EDM clubbing experience, its a fact. I understand that lighting isnt for everyone, but for most it matters and adds to the sensation that the music already gives. The lighting I had in mind isnt seen around here much and if it is then it isnt isnt used properly, so that could effect the opionon of lights from some. Im pretty certain that almost everyone would appreciate what I have in store or soon to have in store. Did ya see the vids from Martin?
The sound system part starts to get very expensive (100,000's), so it may be out of my league, but I do agree that better sound systems are in order...but in the future (on my timeline).
lol, we should never have to hire this smut, it should just come to us. They are looking for attention or for some money throwing monkey to help pay rent and I/we could put them in the spot light for that, aswell the onlookers need eye candy, so everybody wins, especially the DJ cause the view would be spectacular...

....still drooling
Actually you can have fewer lasers and more well positioned mirrors to create that spider effect, so it aint far off...But lasers are something that I especially like, I have a few green and red ones, but am more interested in the full multicolor ones, which usually start at 50grrr and thats quite the investment - again its one light for 50grrr kinda hard to justify that...unless your a money throwing monkey... |

scanners kinda remind me of cheap bars that try to have a dancefloor. Moving heads are what I see at the better clubs.. like the 250 Krypton maybe? I dunno, whatever makes it look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc2pDyEINyg (without the music haha)
I myself love the lasers too though.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRzs44xFvqw :)
this laser they had in montreal was really freakin cool.. it could make reverse pyramid-like shapes with texturized walls.. I had never seen anytthing like it. doesn't show it too well from my phone, but it's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDaF28IdfcM
I agree that lighting does help the atmosphere, but sound and pricing is also more important to me. |

I had never been to Cyber, that was my first time and I felt sooooo bad for Sander....it wasnt even that packed, but I guess the only people that truely enjoyed his music were there so thats always nice :) |

A free shot of jager to all patrons really makes lighting moot!
All kidding aside, I don't think it's just a nice light rig that makes things become better; you will need a full visual aesthetic including projectors, visual displays, thematic arches with designs and props to bring life into a club.
In a club scene, you don't want too crazy of lighting to really distract those that are high from buying more alcohol. |

No not entirely...I'm done arguing to fellow trance addicts (you) online. I realized its a waste of time and childish. My time is much better spent DJing, promoting and bettering my set, kinda like this thead. Anyway ktracid, hard feelings aside, if...and I mean IF you were to come out and see one of my sets what would want to hear, specifically. Cause I dont just play generic house music or generic trance. I just played that one set for clients/friends that were brand new to this type of music, which is the best thing to do under those circumstances. Im pretty versitile, try me... |

I agree in theory. But at the same time I also respectfully disagree and here's why.
90% of scanners are lame and cheap. The scanners form Martin are the best in the buisness, trust me. Very high quality optics, kinda like HD, and by now we all know and are impressed by that technology. Aswell, the patterns or also known as gobos are state of the art and very cool in design and function, if you were drunk enough they would look like lasers...cause the optics combined with cutting edge gobos are that good. The scanners I had in mind would be up against a wall or stage truss so the 180 degree pan is all I would need in that situation. Just looking at prices here...the moving heads can cost up to 15grrr each, but the smartMAC about 2grrr, and the scanners 1grrr. So now you can see why I am leaning towards scanners. But in the end probably moving heads with sanners and colored strobes. Hey I'm just one guy here trying to do the best thing with the amount of money I have, clubs renos to architecture, props, and projectors (thinking of going with HIDEF projectors or even the 3D experience) are great ideas and that would have to be a future thing as money is an issue, but thanks to all for your feedback and opinions, some hilarious ones at that.
This may change your opinion on scanners...
