Sins of a Solar Empire

Real-time simulation/strategy game.

I've never been a big fan of simulation games like Civilization but I can't get enough of this game. It reminds me of Homeworld, so playing this brings back some fond memories of that game. Sins, however, is much much deeper than Homeworld (at least from a gameplay point of view. The storyline is kindergarten stuff compared to HW). You get to play as 3 different races: all of which have a number of unique technologies that change the way one would approach the game. For instance, the TEC are a human race based heavily on trade, so a persons focus here would be to develop trade routes, as well as conventional warfare techs (ballistics, etc). Meanwhile the Advent are a race who's main strength lies in their culture. Apparently, it's possible to win a match as the Advent without firing a single shot (don't know how true it is until I play as them myself).

The only downside is the lack of a dedicated storyline for the single player campaign, which really kills any incentive to play this game alone (other than mastering the 3 different races, which is good enough for about a month of heavy playing).

So yea, anyone playing this? It'd be sick if we could get a 5 on 5 TA multiplayer game going. (or 2v2v2v2v2)

finished the tutorials and started my first game last night.

brief impressions:

+im gonna love this game
+gameplay is seriously awesome
+i think theyve combined the two genres rather well
+zoom! we love the zoom
+runs smooth as silk

-music SUCKS the big one. just awful.
-disappointed with the 2D, just isnt as impressive as others
-the models look pretty ordinary, but again, ive been spoiled with supcom and its moving turrets etc
-graphics overall are plain
-battles arent as much fun as other RTS' yet still satisfying

the gameplay easily makes up for its shortfalls, its neither as deep strategically as masters of orion 2, nor as tactically deep as some of the newer RTSs, but it combines the most important elements of both really well and i cant wait to get stuck deeper into it.

this is definitely one of those NEW games i get excited about. very innovative and cool.

After like 4 maps and probably close to 12 hours of gameplay already, I can safely say that the music has seriously grown on me. The main menu music is still as ear-piercing as always.

Graphics are good enough in my opinion, but aren't anything revolutionary. The game manages to get really intense at times so its kinda good that the graphics are what they are.

Btw, how many capital ships have you built so far? The battles get really fun when you have a fleet of 8 capital ships with 20 heavy cruises, 30 light frigates, etc.

oh, only the 1, it was getting late. biggest fight ive had is only about 10 frigates and a bunch of fighters/bombers. so havent gotten really deep into the combat yet, which im looking fwd to.

oh, the other thing i just cant stand are the unit responses, especially the TEC. sounds like a whiney luke skywalker! id like to turn them off but i assume that also turns off the "big ing cruiser built motherfvcker!" notification which i need at this early stage of play.

I've been hearing very good things about this. Will try and grab the demo soon.
