Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable'
Dr Rowan Williams
Dr Williams says Muslims should have a choice in legal disputes
Dr Williams interview
The Archbishop of Canterbury says the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable".
Dr Rowan Williams told Radio 4's World at One that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system.
Dr Williams argues that adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion.
For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court.
He says Muslims should not have to choose between "the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty". |

And be denied the economic opportunity they might gain by moving to the UK? Many Muslims in the UK are asylum seekers or have moved to seek a higher standard of living.
I don't think this is an argument for transforming the British system, but for allowing an alternative (that doesn't erode the rule of law or order) to a sizable portion of the population that would prefer it. |

Everyone should be equal under the same standard of law. |

terrible concept. just awful. here we have one of the oldest and most successful legal systems in the world, if people want special rules for themselves then i say "stiff !" ESPECIALLY when its based upon some non-sensical UNPROVABLE superstitions.
plus, given political islam's growing nefarious influence in western society, how long before it becomes a cry for special islamic courts? seriously, that.
the western liberal democracy is the current pinnacle of political, economic, social and religious evolution, the last thing it needs is some backwards, superstititious nonsense supplanting proper logic and rationality.
this is the kind of stuff that would get my lazy ass off the couch and in a march of protest. |

Well then you decide what's more important to you. Do you want to live in a place that will offer you various opportunities or do you stick by your beliefs and stay in a place that has religious courts and feel good about yourself. Those are the only two choices one should get, moving to a better place and trying to reform it to suit you instead of you adapting to it is not and should never be a third option.
Everything has a price, and in this case the price for a higher standard of living is adopting to the customs of area you are now living at. |
