Anyone ever read this? I poked around in it today and it looked very interesting. You can find the full text here:

Nobody?

Has anyone read anything at all by William James? Any comments on him?

I had never heard of this. But it looks quite interesting, I might have to buy this book now :p

I liked this on James, from Wikipedia:

quote:
The investigation of mystical experience was constant throughout the life of James, leading him to experiment with chloral hydrate (1870), amyl nitrite (1875), nitrous oxide (1882), and even peyote (1896). James claimed that it was only when he was under the influence of nitrous oxide that he was able to understand Hegel.

:haha:

If you've ever read Hegel...

Yes, I have read "Essays on Radical Empiricism".

I found it amazing, as it gave me many different insights, and his view of consciousness as a function is really inspiring (to me, at least).

I need to get some sleep so I apologise for my short reply. Oh, and I have never read "The varieties of religious experiences"... I've got so many works to read in my own field that it becomes difficult to find time to read unrelated stuff :p

I think I own this book, never read it though as I find most stuff from 50+ years ago dry and boring.

but james had his place :) he is alright by me.

Why? Because of its style?

I wonder whether it's the same problem I have with old books in Portuguese...

there are way to many religous threads in the c0r lately

Probably right. I've recently had kind of a realization (more of a re-realization) and decided to start being more conciliatory, less inflammatory, drop the polemic and start making the topics more productive.

Printed copy is sitting in my filing cabinet right now.

Metaphysics FTW!

No one else read "Essays on Radical Empiricism"?

Nope.

The only radical empiricism I know is from Quine, Davidson and guys like that, whose ideas turned out to shade away from "analytic philosophy" into pragmatism, funnily enough.
