Does it ever strike anybody else as weird, the ritual slapping-together of hands and making of loud noises?

It seems very animal-like.

Most human traditions/social norms are essentially BS.

Yes. But this seems basically identical to what chimps do, rather than just similar. Clapping their hands together and hollering.

Why would we be any different than chimps? I'm fairly sure the average person is closer to a chimp in intelligence than to a genius human. So yeah most people are fairly similar to chimps they just have vocal chords and less hair.

Sophistication and intelligence are human constructs, it doesn't make any sense to apply them to other species.

I don't find the whole clapping/cheering thing weird. Yes it is very animalistic - as are a great deal of human behaviors. It's only unusual if you reject the idea of humans being animals.

Jive is that a Wedell seal in your Avatar?

On to your question. I guess the two approaches I'd take is if we ignore the animal symbolism is there any human symbolism that we can apply to clapping? And are there any good alternatives?

I like clapping for 2 reasons. The first is that it is just a means of showing appreciation. The second is that since it uses hands as opposed to say stomping your feet there is the symbolism that hands are what we use to create, so there is an acknowledgment of the artists turning something from an idea into something made real.

More importantly to me is the question of what is worth clapping for. I think there is a certain social pressure that you have to clap at certain things because its expected rather than because you truly feel it. As to making the Final judgment XX of what is worthy or not I would leave that to an independent third party like Hisham Kabbani. If you can't trust an Islamic Sufi, who can you trust?
