DJs: the serato thread

I'm debating between buying another CDJ and Serato Scratch Live.
I am leaning towards Serato because
a/ a CDJ will run me 800ish+ for an 800 or higher
b/ I already have a CDJ and know how to use it
c/ I would like to make use of my turntables which have been collecting massive amounts of dust
d/ there is probably some functionality in the software of serato (ie, the ability to index more effectively and cue up quicker) that is not available with a CDJ
e/ Burning CDs is a pain in the ass
I'd probably continue playing with CDs for gigs a lot of the time but for my own use, creating mixes for myself and for promo, I think serato would be better.
Do any of you guys have serato and what do you think of it? |

just got serato a couple weeks ago
im still learning it but its pretty kewl, makes things a lot easier as you can clearly see/search songs with matching BPM levels....however I still use it in conjunction with my decks and mixer...i cant really imagine using it by itself only... |

| If I was in your position I would sell the turntables and vinyl and get another CDJ. |

I am not detached enough from my vinyl and my decks to sell them! Plus it appears to be really hard to sell 1200's now, no one is buying, people are going right to CDs.
LightsOut, can you use serato on its own to DJ?? that's kickass - mobile after party DJ set up say what! |

try posting them on tribemagazine.ca they tend to sell fast but for like 1000 for the pair. |

Have you seen all of the postings for ppl selling 1200's on that site?
Anyways, I'm not selling my turntables. |

although my knowledge of it is limited to what I just read on the products page, it looks like you'll still need the decks to use it. |

If I were you, i'd never sell your turntables.
Cut back on your 'two a day' habit on Beatport (hah) and just grab another 800. You have enough vinyl to justify keeping both options. |

Agreed.
Unless you don't actually play out much of your vinyls and this may happen later in the future as you don't buy any more vinyls and buy all mp3s in the future. |

As a former Final Scratch user, I would say to skip straight to CDJ's, but keep your vinyl.
You seem quit attached to your vinyl as are most DJ's who started playing on wax.
However clubs these days are moving to the digital world and all favoring CDJ's. I don't need to go to the pro's vs. con's of CD vs Vinyl as I'm sure you're quite aware.
With a digital laptop system though, you have to take into account the fact that you would be bringing your laptop to a club with more gear to setup.
Personal advice would be to hold onto the vinyl and turntables since they have sentimental value and obviously it's still in working order, but pick up another CDJ.
Good luck :) |
