ROME -- French long jumper Salim Sdiri suffered a one-inch wound to his side when he was hit by a javelin during the Golden Gala on Friday.
The incident occurred midway through the evening when Finnish thrower Tero Pitkamaki slipped at the end of his run-up, hurling the javelin out to the left of the landing area and spearing Sdiri in his right side as he crouched in the long jump warm-up section.
Sdiri suffered no internal damage, Italian athletics federation spokesman Marco Sicari said, adding that Sdiri never lost consciousness but does not remember the accident because he went into shock.
A shocked-looking Pitkamaki held his head in his hands after the incident but took his next throw in the javelin competition.

It could have been worse though considering the weight & speed of a javelin :wtf: |

The first thing that came to mind was George's dad from Sienfeld, in the "Assman" episode where he sits on Fusilli Jerry and takes it right up the pooper
"It was a one in a million shot, doc! One in a million!" |

I'd say more like insanely good luck. Getting hit with a javelin flying at full speed and coming away with no major damage is amazing. I hope the guy who threw it is ok (yes...the one who threw it). There have been a lot of incidents like that that athletes have never recovered from, mentally. Granted, they've been ones that resulted in major injury or death (boxers whose opponents have died, football players who have left someone paralyzed from a hit, pitchers who have hit batters in the head, etc.), but it could probably have the same impact.
Is this common, like people being hit by errant drives or foul balls, or is this a next-to-never fluke? |
