The Sopranos Ending - Explained

I liked the ending, alot. It was very smart.
Like someone else said, were all used to the typical ending. He either gets shot, goes to jail, ends up in witness protection, he takes out NY mob and lives happily ever after? No. David Chase always comes up with a surprise no one expects.
He recently said in an interview that "Some people will like it, some people won't. But if they could all go back and watch the show from the beginning, and then see the ending, they would get it."
With that in mind, watch the last episode again. You will see that the characters really didn't change that much. You see
Paulie going on with his superstitious crap
Tony starts venting about his mother again to this new therapist, looking for pity, so he can justify his behavior.
A.J is still a useless spoiled kid.
Meadow is still "aspiring" to be something. Although I think in that last scene she was in a rush to tell the family she is pregnant.
The last scene was designed to show that although life goes on for the Sopranos, it's over for us, the viewers. We've been watching this show through Tony's mind for the most part, and in the end, it goes black, and it's over.
I think in the first episode of this season, when they take the trip upstate, Tony and Bobby are sitting in the boat, Bobby says "You don't see it when it comes...it just goes black."
The only part I didn't like was regarding Silvio...does he stay in a coma indefinately or what?
Someone also made the observation of the cat being Adriana, reincarnated...thought that was interesting.

Heres some things people have been posting on other message boards.
TarotJoe from HBO.com boards -
If you read back thorugh the boards and see all of the different claims of 'I know what will happen', from the Sopranos going into witness protection, to Tony getting clipped or going to the big house, and AJ continuing to meander or begin working closely with 'the business' (he's working with Little Carmine with money from Tony on the movie) to the entire family getting wiped out, David Chase set up the ending for any one of these scenerios, and then some.
Read these boards and 90% of EVERYTHING everyone said would happen due to spoiler sites they went to, rumors they heard, etc. could have happened after the final scene went to black screen.
Chase allows us to write the ending we would like to have seen. I like the 'we got clipped' angle where Chase put a hit on the audience. As Tony looked up at his daughter entering the diner, was she the last thing he saw? As always, the music used in the show has great meaning. Read the lyrics to 'Don't Stop Believing' and also did you notice the next song on the juke after that was 'Anyway You Want It' -- and that's how The Sopranos ends. Anyway YOU chose.

Dafultonny on AOL message boards - regarding the lyrics of the Journey song at the end -
Meadow's parking job pretty much represents the mistakes the family has made throughout the years, and if you've watched the show you know the family has always gone on, and they have NEVER broken up... after all they were meeting for dinner in this final episode. Meadow keep on hitting the curb, she keep on making a mistake while parking, yet she NEVER gave up. She could've easily found a new parking spot, but she insisted in parking right there. She hit the curb, she pulled back out... she hit the curb again, she pulled back out and tried once more.
Listen to the lyrics of the Journey song -- they explain the show and the family, and the fans exceptionally well.
Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill,
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time,
Some will win, some will lose,
Some were born to sing the blues,
Oh, the movie never ends,
It goes on and on and on and on.

And another post by crappydenims on HBO.com boards -
I loved it for so many reasons that I'm not sure where to start.
Nope, it wasn't an "end", no neat, tidy packages to wrap everything up ... just like real life. Does it leave an opening for a movie? I suppose, but I hope they don't do a movie, it would ruin it in my opinion.
People will speculate about this for a long time to come, whether they hated it or loved it and that in itself is a brilliant accomplishment.
There were speculators all over the message boards with the three likely conclusions: Tony gets whacked; Tony gets thrown in jail; Tony goes into the witness protection program. If Chase offered us the tidy package ending, which of the three would it be? It might make a 1/3 of the viewers happy, but the others would be clamouring "that sucked, Tony shouldn't have died" or "b.s. Tony would never rat out his guys" or "BORING, LAME, Tony's in jail?" The ending would have been talked about for maybe a few days, maybe a week.
I don't think I've ever sat through anything more tense, whether on TV or at a movie, then I did those last minutes while Meadow was trying to park and Tony was scanning the patrons at the diner. Something was going to happen, but we'll never know what ... just like Tony would never know either.
If you'll think back to other parts in the series, there was not much that was tidied up or brought to conclusion and that is much like real life to me and that's why I enjoyed the show so much, even the last couple of seasons. We were in Tony's life all these years, now we're not. Maybe it was left that way to allow us viewers to speculate ad nauseum about what happened next when it went blank, but in my opinion, our view of Tony's life just ended and that is all there is to it. I can see where it left people feeling disappointed, but I think in the long run, after the initial shock wears off, people are going to realize that there was no other way to "end" it. Why? Because just as the song said, it goes on and on and on and on ... we're just not privvy to it anymore. We can deal, I know I can. I'm just happy that I got to watch a great show on TV, something that is rare more and more these days. |

Yeah, sopranos is lame as hell. Jack Bauer didn't get this many threads. Larry david didn't get this many threads. You didn't get this many threads. I didn't get this many threads. I don't even think Jesus got this many threads. |

loved the finale, david chase is a genius
i thought the same as above, Chase whacks the audience with the black screen reflection from Tony's and Bobby's chat in the boat. |
