I don't really know how I feel about the whole issue. I wasn't even aware this was a problem within the music industry until just recently. I can understand why the artist has the right to be compensated for his or her work, but DI being sued for $2 million when their actual revenue has only totaled a few hundred thousand the last couple years seems excessive. It just depresses me to realize that everybody I personally know who is involved with internet radio could have something very dear taken away from them, or even worse, descend into financial ruin. I mean, this is a station that had its start broadcasting out of somebody's basement.
Most of the artists presented on internet radio stations like DI.fm are underground to the point where exposure is more important than the royalty checks. I think DI is just an easy target because they're so huge. I wonder if Europe is having these kinds of problems within their recording industry. |
