hi guys
what do you find is the best way of beatmatching ableton to cdjs? i dont have a midi out on my mixer so have to do it manually.
is it best to set a slider on my midi controller to 20bpm of range on ableton and do it the old fashioned way?

They problem with beatmatching CDJ's with ableton is that any real-time correction is difficult and spotty at best. You can't exactly jog/shuffle in ableton. Mixing a CDJ track into stuff already playing in ableton is no biggie, but the other way around is not easy. Here's what I would do (If anyone has a better method, i'd be glad to know):
-Assign knob on midi controller to Ableton's tempo master.
-Set tempo to approximately what is being played on the CDJ.
-Control tracks from the session view.
-Cue track in ableton on a downbeat from the CDJ.
-Use midi controller to make minor adjustments to ableton's tempo.
-Cross your fingers and pray.
This is probably a bit different from what you're used to, so it may take some practice. The problem is that any real-time correction to keep the beats matched will have to be done on the CDJ, which is alreay playing at full volume.

Another solution:
On your CDJ, turn on master tempo/key lock.
In ableton (the cued track), tap the tempo to get it as close as you possibly can.
Then beatmatch the CDJ (outgoing track) to match ableton. Not too easy, but as long as they are fairly close and you have key lock on, it might work. |

ooh, i will give it a go like that thanks :D, although does he set the global quantization to none? so that as soon as he triggers the clip it plays? |

if it's not playing anything else, then the first clip will just start regardless of the quantization level... and he taps space a lot, so I think that's the case.
interesting technique. works well for that kind of loop, but for a real track I don't think it would be as easy.
