I have been gaming since 1984 and over the years, games and systems have come and gone. However, some games are still around, even from the early days, such as 1987, which was a year where many series were born...and are continuing onto this day.
IMO change is a double-edged sword: the right of change can make a game great...or the wrong kind can it up, to put it bluntly.
Games that I feel that got positive change....
Metal Gear series
Grand Theft Auto series
As these games progressed with the times, they got drastically improved with changes. Metal Gear itself started in 1987. GTA came out in 1997.
Now, for the downside.
Games I feel that got worse with change....
Final Fantasy Series
Castlevania
Both of these series began in '87, but as time went on, went through changes that just killed them. Final Fantasy was great until X and X2 came along.
And Castlevania, well the newest one I played was Lament of Innocence for PS2 and thats been out for a few years but changing traditions radically just screws things up, in my opinion. Symphony of the Night was still your traditional side-scroller but it was innovative and did what Simon's Quest tried to do.
Two major releases which I'm looking forward to, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV, hopefully will implement the good kind of changes that have made them success after success with each release.
Anyway, that's what I have to say.

May I also add, Resident Evil is a series that was going great until they came out with:
Gun Survivor
Outbreak, Files 1 & 2
Resident Evil 4
4 ruined a great tradition with the way things were changed, such as the camera angle, and....humans injected with some mind control crap, and NOT being zombies? Sacrilege. Resident Evil 1-3 plus Code: Veronica are all true to tradition and remain as my favorites.

I do. If you buy Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence for PS2, the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are on the 2nd disc. |

No way man! 4 is my favorite of all time sure it was completely diffrent but thats what makes it that much better. You obviously have not played it and beat it so dont knock it. RE4 orginated from a project meant to be Devil May Cry, but the change wouldve been to drastic from the orginal RE gameplay. RE 4 you get to shoot more and kill more, more physics interactions overall a good game. I recommend you rent and try again ;).If not im getting you a copy! Expectations for resident evil 5 are beyond belief but to say one game in a series signifies a decline in the series is propostourus
Ill agree with you on the final fantasy series ever since 9 I lost interest :o , also another series i lost touch with was Tekken. Not saying the newer ones arent good but after awhile it just became "meh" to me. |

i love the metal gear solid stories. If not for the *meh* gameplay, definitely for just sitting down and reading about the plot of the universe. Its like my very own manly soap opera. I've never played the original Metal Gear series :(
While I think Vice City and San Andreas are 10/10s, I still hold my original top-down sprite GTA as an 11/10.
People claim video games to be a work of art. bleh! I think there are only 2 inductions into the "art gallery" and that would be the Silent Hill series and Shadows of the Colossus. Serially, the music, direction/presentation, characters, dialogue, and of course the story is what more games need these days! I don't think any game in the SH series has been a grand scale hit and Shadows was a high-renter until it became $20.
as we can see, i'm not from the 1980s. :( |
