I sometimes find myself seeking out stories of horrible events. Not that I actually want horrible events to happen -- I don't -- but for some reason I want to know all about them and know about why they happen. Horror movies are a big attraction in Euro-America, which I find interesting, because the real life horrors which are really so much worse receive comparatively little attention. It might be that to think of such things happening to real people is too disturbing. I don't know. But read on if you want, and offer any accounts of events you've heard of that horrified you, if you feel inclined.

"MONUC's special human rights section also published a report on human rights violations in Ituri, containing detailed testimonies of survivors of militia attacks, which included claims of cannibalism.
The report told the story of Zainabo Alfani, a mother of three, who said that she had watched militiamen cook and eat two of her children.
"They had in one corner of the room skinned dead bodies, and two other bodies on a grill, and at the same place, they prepared her two young daughters and introduced them in a pot full of boiling water and oil," Crystelle Nyakura, an official in MONUC's human rights section, quoted Alfani as saying.
Her third child, a six-year-old boy, was spared. MONUC reported that Alfani died on Sunday in a Kinshasa hospital after militiamen sexually mutilated and raped her.
Recounting an earlier incident, MONUC said Alfani told them that she had been abducted on 5 June 2003 with some businessmen - who were killed - but that she had survived when the militiamen noticed they could use her long vaginal lips for witchcraft.
She recounted that her vaginal lips were cut off and diced into small pieces, which the militiamen swallowed with water mixed with her blood, according to MONUC."

"[My husband] began to tell me stories. His ancestors said that he must kill me and the child so that he can be rich," Helen told Nobody's Child, a BBC documentary on the investigation into the London boy's death.
"He showed me the path and forced me to go along that path. He was pushing me and demanding me to go whether I like it or not. He said he was going to kill [my] baby first while I see the baby, then secondly he will kill me."
Although Helen tried to escape, Mabuda [her husband] caught her and forced her to hold Fulufhuwani's legs while he cut the child's throat.
"When the child was dead, he started to cut all those pieces, the hands, the legs and even the sex organs," Helen says.
Limbs from children, primarily the sexual organs, are said to be the most potent. These are sometimes taken from live victims because their screams are thought to enhance the power of the medicines.

They [the "Lord's Resistance Army" rebels] kept on beating us and they denied food or water from us. We complained saying we were hungry and thirsty. They stopped raping the women that were in our group and acted as though they were going to let us eat and drink. The ladies were forced to boil water in a big tin.
Shortly after this they announced that we would eat the government soldier - supposedly, me.
For a long time, the rebels took turns at beating us men with hot metal, and raping the girls.
I was already spiritually dead.
They returned to me at some point and re-tied me before chopping off my lips. They then cut off my right ear and my nose.
Some time later their commander Joseph Kony phoned, telling them to leave the place immediately.
We were then relocated about 15km further into the bush.
I was bleeding. I could not cry anymore and for two days I couldn't drink water.
The rebels debated for two days whether or not I was to be killed. They told me I was a bad omen and so must suffer.
My wounds had begun to rot. The smell was so bad. But still they refused me any treatment.
Then on the seventh day, because I never expected to live, I insulted their commander in the hope that in revenge he would kill me.
He just ordered his soldiers to cut off my hands. They did.
That evening I remember seeing my fellow female abductees crying. One of them had been killed and another had had her breast cut off.
I don't know how but by what I think was the eleventh day of being abducted I was still living.
The rebels kept telling me that I would soon be dead. They picked out two of the starving, tired girls that could hardly even walk from being repeatedly raped and ordered them to take me home.
The three of us were helpless. The girls were crying, inconsolably, when some government soldiers found us following a further night spent out in the open.
They took us straight to the nearest hospital where we received treatment. On reaching hospital, my wife came to see me with my parents, relatives and friends.
They found it hard to see me as a human being. I was rotting, smelly and deformed.
My wife could not find words to speak to me. She just felt very sick.
My thoughts were filled with bitterness. I hated life and wished that I had just been killed. All I wanted was to commit suicide and die.

I try, but I cannot forgive, and I cannot forget.

Before I read stories like this, I knew that torture went on in other parts of the world. I knew that things were very bad. But I didn't know that they were that bad. It's really unnerving to think of what human beings do to one another. |

Bloody hell :(
Well, stories of Hiroshima still shock me whenever I hear them: I can't seem to find the documentary anymore, but my eyes were humid throughout the whole thing... and the most upsetting moment was when a mother wrote about how she saw her daughter stuck under piles of wood being burned by the fire, without being able to save her.
I wish I could find the links, but Youtube seems to have taken them down :( |
