Wii Virtual Console v. Xbox Live Arcade v. Sony's Download Service

RJT
Haven't seen this discussion anywhere yet, so I thought I'd attempt to get a reasonable dialogue going on them in here.

First, I don't know much about Sony's service - If someone could link me to some info on it so I could educate myself, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Having used both XBLA and WiiVC extensively already, I'm definitely giving the early nod to WiiVC.

The WiiVC has the benefit of drawing from essentially amounts to the highest quality library of games in the history of gaming (securing the rights to Genesis titles was a HUGE feather in Nintendo's cap), and is generally priced in a very reasonable manner. The games perform perfectly, and I've only seen one case of slowdown that lasted all of a tenth of a second in Super Mario 64 (And if I remember, there were sporadic moments of lag in the original) - Everything else has run flawlessly. Add to this, they've consistently added new titles every week, and you've got a company that is steamrolling it's competition (IMO).

XBLA is great - Don't get me wrong. Geometry Wars, Assault Heroes, and Small Arms are incredibly fun original titles, and the potential for perfect arcade ports is there - Unfortunately it hasn't been realized yet. The arcade ports that have made it to XBLA have all been substantially flawed - And almost none of them work in their intended fashion when trying to play online multiplayer. I'm confident many of these issues will be resolved in the coming months, but as a 360 owner for over a year, I have to say that this slow pace needs to pick up, both with regard to games being released and being fixed.

Thoughts?

Microsoft is well aware of this new marketplace war. Little do most people know M$ likes to play dirty, and will fight for every little penny thats in your pocket. Microsoft has something up its sleeve this time around, Coming summer 2007 will realease a face lift to its Dashbords and Marketplace.

Some say it includes a Web Browser, and other dirty tricks. Should be interesting.

I honestly dont think Microsoft dissapoint its 5 million Xbox Live Subscribers.

Hoestly who wants to pay to play old games. Dont get me wrong i'd like to play old gems but thats where ROMS come into place for.

At least Xbox Marketplace is releasing new arcade games and not just games from the pass. Which by the way some can be played online which is always a plus.

Not only that, old games from the pass such as:

Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and a few others have been given a face lift, and been given the online head to head multiplayer. Nintendo has not done that. And probably wont since, online multiplayer isnt there thing.

And lets not forget Movie And TV Episode Downloads of Xbox Lives MarketPlace.

I'll have to give the nod to XBLA as well. Actually, Ill admit I've never used Wii's service, but from what Im hearing, all it consists of is straight ports of old classics onto the Wii platform. With XBLA, like Space Marine said, developers are adding features to old games, plus releasing completely new games altogether.

Now, if Nintendo were to, say, rerelease Goldeneye with online multiplayer, or maybe the original Super Smash Bros with online multiplayer....or Mario Kart SNES with online multiplayer...my opinion would change.

Oh and RJT, PS3's online system is practically right now. Its un-userfriendly and theres only 3 games available right now (none of which are really any good). Of course that'll change, but right now I think MS has the edge with XBLA.

First of all, loads of people want to pay for old games - There's a HUGE market for them, and just because many people don't mind playing occasionally poorly emulated ROMS on a PC doesn't mean that a substantial number of others don't mind paying 5-10 dollars for a perfect quality port of a great title. The average family with a Wii/360/PS3 in their homes aren't looking to rush to the computer to play 4 player Goldeneye or Mario Kart - They want to do it in the living room, on the TV. Gaming is still (for some) a social experience that ROM's don't exactly promote.

Nintendo has already said that online multiplayer gaming and homebrew software are top priorities (Space Marine: I don't know why you would think it's "Not their thing." It may not have been for GC, but Nintendo is definitely embracing online gaming with this generation). Furthermore, Nintendo is claiming that games purchased through the store may see updates, added content, etc. This essentially amounts to the exact same service that XBLA is offering, it's simply not in "full gear" yet.

XBLA has a year head start on Wii Shop, so naturally it would appear as though it's doing "better" (A subjective term to say the least). I will say, however, that the appearance of classic arcade games on XBLA has been disappointing to say the least. The online multiplayer aspect of most games is wrought with bugs and exploits, and in general, some of the ports have come off poorly (MK3, Contra). The one thing XBLA has been brilliant for to this point has been original content. Geometry Wars, Small Arms, etc. are terrific games at a terrific price - If MS can keep up the quality "indie" scene in gaming, as well as fine tune some of the online multiplayer aspects of their games, XBLA could very well be unstoppable.

All in all, I have to say I'm pleased with both services and definitely looking forward to what each has in store for the next few months.

Interestingly enough, as Goldeneye has been mentioned, it's looking like Goldeneye could very well appear on BOTH Wii Shop and XBLA - Nintendo has struck a deal with MS to release Rare games on Wii Shop, but MS still owns the company and would undoubtedly not be foolish enough to give Nintendo any kind of exlcusivity on any of the titles. So perhaps that will be the true test - Which can run the better Goldeneye deathmatch!

:p
