Ableton Live 6... (pg. 3)

one user posetd that if you have the correct warping then just use the volume faders... sureley thats cheating? youve practically done the set before you hit the venue...

Sorry, man, but that's about as much cheating as marking the bpms on your vinyl and practicing a set before you hit the gig or using a CDJ's master tempo to mix in key - not 'cheating' at all.

If you think this is 'cheating' you must also think that brain surgery is cheating death, and that the automobile is an unfair way to get around for those people still riding horses.

I'm surprised you consider this 'cheating' and you are interested in final scratch and serato like products, since they don't enrich the art of DJing in any way, but only make it easier to carry around music and beatmatch.

It's true that it's "easy" to DJ with ableton, but only if you're operating under the old definition of DJing, which is now obsolete with ableton. If you're using ableton to do what you can do on vinyl, that's foolish. Ableton lets you do things you could never dream of doing with final scratch and serato scratch live, which I used for approximately two years before taking ableton seriously.

use channel the volume slider...and if you need an easier way to handle the gain just put "Utility" from live plugins on the track...that's what I do, so I can control it easier with midi. :)

I just got this program and I really wanna learn how to mix full sets with it because I'm travelling and don't have access to turntables or mixers!

I'm finding it very difficult to figre all this out, it would be so much easier if I had someone to show me step by step what everything is and does.

I've started to read through the user manual, and it took me a good hour (almost) just to get through the first 20 pages of 387! It's kinda frustrating, and threads like this are here to help.

I still haven't figured out how this whole warpingt hing works. Pretty much EVERY time I select a track and after it loads, it plays at a much MUCH SLOWER bpm than if I play it through winamp. Basically, my first step is trying to figure out why these tracks have predetermined warping markers, and why they play at such a slow speed when I open them??

Jesus...

View -> Lessons

VOILA! step by step on how-to everything.

Or, use the Ableton Cross fader.

It doesn't really "beatmatch for you." You still have to make sure your tracks are in sync and correctly warped. The difference is that you get to do this before you play a set.

so its pre done then lol you dont have to beatmatch at a gig i think thats the point people are making.

some people use the crossfader for certain purposes in ableton. for example, there's a pic of sasha's ableton setup and he has the crossfader set to fade into a return channel with whatever set of effects he uses so he can use it essentially as a dry/wet.

to clarify, this is really about peoples perceptions. anyone with half a brain can beatmatch perfectly. once you hit this plateau it becomes more about mixing style than ability to beatmatch. pvd can beatmatch, tiesto, max graham, all the big names as WELL as all the unknowns out there. the point is anyone can beatmatch. and now the comptuer can. so because ableton takes care of this instantly it offers more freedom in terms of mixing style. the idea is that instead of spending 30 seconds or whatever beatmatching tracks on stage and THEN doing what you need to do to make a creative solid mix, you "beatmatch" (ie warp) everything beforehand and then do what you would normally do with your free time.

i dont see how its a question of cheating or "not having to beatmatch" or whatever since everyone can do this anyways.

Yes, I realize that. I do the same thing myself. I'm just not really into the use of the crossfader for mixing purposes, that's all.

yeah but alot of djs dont do much in there free time how many djs out there do more than just beatmatching and mixing? ableton could quite easily be used for the wrong reasons and you will get people using it for a gig and just standing there doing nothing most of the time.

exactly. which is why the majority of the ALDJ community shuns people who would just go up there and just mix tracks like they would on a cdj and have it do the beatmatching for them. i hate that
