I agree. People that are on these boards generally have a very deep passion for the music. Same can be said for just about all genres of electronica as it's not commercial.
Before discovering trance I use to listen to a lot of rap and hip hop. After getting sick of it after many years, I borrowed some Seb Fontaine cd's to listen to. Well, it took about 2 years to really get hooked on the music, then another year or so to grow into the scene (parties, club night, spending countless hours looking for music etc etc). I know all my friends enjoy the music I listen to but they just don't get hooked on the scene or the music as much as we all have.
If people want to see the scene grow in Van, they're gonna have to deal with the newbies at the events because that's how they are gonna get hooked. This sucks though as I think the only DJ's we will see in Van that are going to be well atteneded, are the DJ's with big names ala Tiesto, PVD, Armin, Sasha and Digweed. Who knows, maybe these newbies get hooked and do get more invloved in alot of the better talents out there and push the promoters to bring them in. I can only see this taking many many years.
And for Angelo, I know spending $100 to see Armin is silly for us who live and breathe trance. We know what to expect from Armin and any of the other big names every time they come to town so it's really a waste of money (even at $50). But I look at it this way. It comes down to pricing and it's quite simple, if you ask $100 and people will pay that, then why lower price?
I bought Tiesto tickets for a show a few years back (just after he was named #1 DJ for DJ Mag's poll for the first time) and I had some friends that couldn't go. No problem as I would just sell them. I guess the day before there was an article in the Sun advertising Tiesto and his new ranking. Anyways, I was only expecting to get about $40 for the tickets (paid $20) but was amazed to hear people getting upwards of $100 for theirs. In the end I sold teh extras for $125 each. The people paying that much for those tickets are paying that much for the Armin tickets.
If you have fun at cheaper events great, but for the people going to these events, it must be worth the money as they are paying it time and time again. We all have different opinions on value...... |
