what is good production?

When searching for new tunes online, I that I like listening to or would like to hear in a club, songs that basically make me want to get up and dance.

I've heard people say that you should also look for songs with "good production". I have an idea what this means but I'm not sure. Since there are so many new releases online these days, what should you look for when sifting through them other than making sure that you like it? thanks!

oh man that's a tough one...well, good production means different things to different people. people who actually know how to produce music hear and listen for different things in tracks - i know i do. (besides having good basic EQ and mastering)

but some might say the song has to have variety (build up, mellow out, etc.)...others are content with a good driving beat and bassline with little change in the overall track (and relish the slightest variations that may occur)...

it's really up to you and some experience with the overall vibe of your venue, crowd, etc. ...can play a part too in what 'works' ...

I try to look for tunes that sound nice and clear. Tunes that have a nice solid kick to them. Someone on these boards told me something that I will never forget. It was some of the best advice I have ever got about searching for good tunes. He said, "You should only buy tunes that send chills thru your body". I cant say that I follow that to a tee, but I have been practicing it more and more latley. So in other words, I try to buy tunes that move me. You will get the hang of it the more you search and the more you purchase music. You will come across tunes that have a great break (melody) to them, but the intro leading up to it just does not sound right. Maybe its a little to dull. Maybe it just dosnt have that punch to it. Its hard to make the decision to not play those kinds of tracks if it has a great break (melody) to it, but if the rest of the track dosnt sound great then I will just pass it up and try to hunt down a better track. Hope this helps.

a track is be a good track, you will feel it, like the force.

When I say good production, or good production values, I refer to artists who kick ass at the technical side of things...

Prime example is Junkie XL-

And also try not to confuse a good production with a good tune.
A good tune may not be a good production and vice versa.

look at it like this

just because you're a sound engineer and know your way around a studio doesnt mean you always make good tracks.

I agree.( When I was saying tune I was meaning track. It may have thru some people off.)

Anyway, to me, an all around great track is one that is produced good, clear sound, nice kick drum that has punch to it, etc.... , and has alot of feeling in it. One that you can just tell that the producer put his or her heart into. You know what I mean? So, yes I do agree. There are pretty much 2 parts (as far as this topic goes) that I look for in a track when I am purchasing music. And yes, ofcoarse that is true what you are saying. Just cause you know how to drive a car does not mean that you are a good driver. If you ask me, there is probally way more music out there than there is good music. Thanks for the response.
