Anyone read this? Its the story of an English drug smuggler who gets caught and ends up in San Pedro jail in Bolovia. The most bizarre jail in the world. It is incredible what goes on in there and how the place is run.
It also provides some good smuggling tips ;) |

i've been recommended this book by a mate and will pick it up when i'm in Bolivia early next year. :)
If you liked that book i reckon you will also love Henri-Charriere - Papillon which is the true story of a French man who is framed and sentenced to life imprisonment on the brutal Penal Colonies off the coast of French Guinea in South America. The Penal Colonies are ridden with deadly diseases like Cholera, and Flesh Eating ants, Quick Sand, and are on Islands surrounded by man eating sharks. The deadly criminals, murderers, rapists and political prisoners, etc have created an incredible society where htey largely govern themselves. While he is captive he makes 13 escape attempts over the 11 years he is imprisoned, sometimes succeeding only to be jailed again in a different country (where he escapes again) and then spends a year living with a tribe of indians deep in the amazon rainforest. After being on the run for over two years he is caught again and then put into a "Sensory Deprevation" cell where he lives for two years with no light or sound - most people either die or go insane
After watching Prison Break i can almost gaurantee they were inspired by this book (the two main characters are too similar to be coincidence imo) only Prison Break is a pale watered down hollywood effigy compared to Papillon (i still love it though ;) ) I couldn't put this book down, would read 8 - 12 hours a day easily :p and still rates as one of the best books i've ever had hte fortune of reading :) |
