I wrote Ms Eustace a letter responding to her article. I read it and it is actually an accurate view if you are going from the drug abuse perspective which the article obviously targeted. She did make an vailiant effort to point out that some kids are there to dance (the first time raver who is aged 25)
The drug situation is an age old discussion and honestly there was really nothing groundbreaking or controversial about her rhetoric. She failed to address the responsibility of the parents of these MINORS she was writing about. Canadian code dictates that until a child reaches the age of the majority ie:18 they are under the strict duristriction of their parents. Not once did she mention that the parents should be held responsible.
Something to think about. My opinion is that yes there are drugs, there are drugs everywhere though. You go to an AC-DC concert and some dude is smoking weed or whatever. People used to snort coke on their dashboards before high school homeroom class. It is everywhere. I advised her that she might want to write a series of articles and examine the other side ie: the legally resposible parental side and find out why they are allowing their kids out until all hours of the night and if they really feel that this is a problem why they are exercising their authority or doing something about it...

my two cents

"most stick with a less-is-more approach to barely-there club attire. Many young women appear to simply have forgotten to put on their shirts."

good thing someone else has noticed that too

"She has taken two pills so far and plans to take two more in another hour or so."

and that girl must have been crazy

yes the drug problem at parties is an old story, but it's good that media keep it up in the news. weed and crystal meth have been overdone, E doesnt get much attention. at least they weren't saying ravers do all kinds of and OD en masse at every party. this is more of an awareness article, to give parents a wake up call. i dont see it as scrutinizing, which is nice for a change with a lot of negative conotations surrounding our scene.

and props to the guy in the print suit!

For about $125, people can order drug-testing kits from websites such as dancesafe.org or send in a pill to be tested at ecstasydata.org.
But talk to Rintoul and he'll tell you that all these online sources do is give people a false sense of security.

125 bux for a test kit!?! Damn someone got their facts wrong... most retail outlets sell standard reagent test kits (including Marquis & Mandelin) cost around $40 AUS. This is all onsite harm reduction workers use in Australia such as Enlighten Harm Reduction and CodeBlue. If you want the EZ-Extreme kit witch has everything (Marquis, Mandelin, Mecke, Robadope & Simons) there is a place on the internet you can buy inc shipping for around $60 AUS. (ie. CAD is worth more than AUS so obviously it's cheaper here).

$125 on the other hand is the full price of a lab analysis (ie probably GC/MS) from ecstacydata.org last time I checked. Unfortunately this never used to be the case (it was either free or $30) but since they ran out of funding since it's all run by donation, they had to put up the price... In countries such as The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany (and probably a few other European countries) Lab testing is free and all part of a government initiative to reduce the risk of harm. Whereas our governments (AU,US,CAN) try to believe in a zero tolerace stance against drug use some other governments realise that there will most likely always be people who will take drugs in our society and rather than ignore them offers means to reduce the risks involved.

It's funny that the RCMP officer says all these online sources for pill testing do is give a false sence of security and then only a few paragraphs down the artice says:

quote:
In fact, drug analyses of 1,700 pills collected by the B.C. RCMP drug awareness team found that most ecstasy pills are mixed with a side product. Seventy per cent of the samples included methamphetamine while others included substances such as the cat anaesthetic, ketamine.

geez... even a simple Marquis and Mandelin reagent test kit will test for Methamphetamine and Ketamine... let alone a lab testing (such as ecstacydata.org) will tell you exacty every chemical in the pill. Sure somebody who has no idea about using a reagent test kit (such as Marquis) could test a pill see it come up purple and say all good and eat it... but he's obviously missed the point. The point is that these test kits are clearly very limited to what they can do and everyone in the harm reduction agencies who use these test kits onsite at raves and clubs will usually stress this point. The reagent test kit is there as a simple means to help identify some of the chemicals in a pill. It can test for MDxx (MDMA, MDEA, MDA, MBDB) and also test for other harmful or deadly adulterants (such as PMA, DXM ect). The test kits are not 100% accurate and are limited in thier scope. All in all they can save lives. Of course there would be no "false sence of security" if there where onsite lab testing such as in raves in Germany and Switzerland now would there?

Studies conducted in Europe have clearly shown that pill testing has reduced risk to the drug taking community and also lowered their drug consumption... Even in Australia workers at pill testing booths have witnessed 1st hand, ravers having pills tested.. it came up positive for Ketamine... and they walked away and just left their pills there because they did not want to consume them.
