I am very sad to create this topic myself to clear things up.
First of all, let me stress out: I am not going to judge anybody!
I always believe where two people having an argument, both may have a good reason to do so.
But after reading this topic about Piet @ pawnshop I feel I have to tell something from the other side as well, as I only read one side.
If there is a person in the world that knows best what's going on in Piet's head, it's got to be me.
I know him for 10 years now, have spend very much time with him and had in depth talking about things which only I or few other people know.
Allthough his sense of humor is not understood by everybody, it is never his intention to disrespect anybody.
Everybody is free in not believing this off course, it's a free world.
About the cigaretboxthrowingincident:
I think I was there when it happened, but I am not quite sure what I exactly have seen, as we had very little sleep when we were there, and didn't had much in the next 48 hours.
I think i saw Piet throwed an empty cigaret box to MellyMel, but there was not a real argue in respond, so I thought it to be meaningless.
In LA we heard from TA's that MellyMel had taken this very personal and was very upset about it. I was there when Piet heard it and he took it by surprise. When I asked what happened he said he could not understand how she took it so bad as he recalled that the two off them had a nice conversation.
Coming home and reading the whole topic I phoned Piet about it, because it doesn't felt like that's something Piet would do.
He thought he had a good conversation, and wasn't angry at all about MellyMel's comment about one track not being good.
I know Piet, and I know he is not bothered by it, and certainly would not make a fuzz about it. Actually he said he had a nice and pleasant chat.
He throwed an empty cigaret box to catch her attention while she was talking to somebody else.
It was not meant to be disrespectfull or in a negative way.
And indeed, that's what people here in Holland do sometimes.
It all depends on how you throw it, and why you throw it.
Now I can completely understand that MellyMel did not understand that.
However she could have asked him directly, that's what I think is a more constructive way to clear out an argument, but it's her life of course.
The bashing that followed is all based on the assumption that Piet's intentions were to disrespect her.
I read some reactions asking why he hasn't replied yet.
Geeezzzz.. give him a break, we came back yesterday without having much sleep, and there's more in life than reacting on some arguments on a board.
He will leave tomorrow for another gig. After that he may find some time to respond.
I took the time to do so though, because it don't like to see friends get harmed like that.
Some other bashes about he emptying the club is low IMO.
It's a house club and we all know that's what's going to happen if trance is played. Personally I respect Piet for playing anyway, as he could have said: "sorry guys, I am not going to play in a house club like that if Metropolis shut down". Instead he did play for the people that came especially for him, allthough he knew in advance it would be difficult to keep everybody in the club satisfied.
I hope a post from somebody that is as close to Piet as I am would shed some different light on the subject.
If MellyMel is still convinced Piet had bad intentions, so be it.
Everybody is free to do whatever he/she wants, but I think you always should know the story of the other side as well.
Actually, what I have learnt so far in my life is that you never really know all facts. So judging somebody or having an opinion on some subject without knowing the whole story isn't really fair, right?
I see this happen too many times, and makes me sad.
I do it too off course, I am no saint, but keeping that in mind and trying to think differently can perhaps add up to a nicer and more positive world :) |

Thank you for clearing this up, Benno. I have stayed out of all this because I found both of you to be pleasant to spend time with. Terry and I were a little confused by all of the drama. I had a good time Friday night in spite of everything else. That was my own personal experience that night though. Melly is a nice person and I honestly believe this was an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Thank you for coming to Florida with Piet. I don't think anyone has really acknowledged how rare that is for you. I believe that if there is one thing that can be said without a doubt it's that you are one of the nicest people in the scene.
