New iPods Support Gapless Playback

roogles
Not sure how many of you use an iPod. I've never bought one because the software didn't support gapless playback (unless you loaded replacement firmware from Rockbox, which isn't something I wanted to screw with). This meant that you couldn't listen to mixes w/o hearing a gap between each track transition, unless of course you had the mix as a single file.

Apple announced this week that their new iPods will finally support gapless playback. The only other players I've seen with this feature were the Rio Karma and one player from iRiver. Just thought I would pass this on in case anyone is in the market for an mp3 player.

this isnt true gapless playback. its software-emulated playback, via itunes. itunes fuxx0rs your tracks into pseudo-gapless playback. it is not like the Karma, which was true gapless playback enabled by the DEVICE - not the interface software on the computer. they have also given itunes basically total control over the ipod - that means that apple can update and do whatever they want with any settings and anything on your ipod. apple sucks.

I should have known this was too good to be true. :( So iTunes 7 actually modifies the files when it scans your library for tracks that should be gapless?

Do you know if the alternative firmware from Rockbox will enable true gapless playback like the Karma?

hey trust me I was kinda interested in it when I first saw it too, and I felt the same "too good to be true" feeling when I learned what the real story was. What I am waiting for is the 80GB wide-screen. Hell, I think I'll be able to hold off for the 100gb version :P

users are already reporting problems with itunes 7 messing up their collection or otherwise haxx0ring their computer - it goes through EVERY track in your collection to enable gapless playback.

I dont know much about the roxbox software - I briefly considered doing it to my ipod (which was a gift btw :) ) - but then after reading a good number of disclaimers, I decided not to.

i don't understand all the hoopla... when I put mixes on my iPod they are 1 track and if I want to skip a track I just fast forward with the scroll wheel which is ace...

if I rip mix comps on CDs that I have... I use Cool Edit Pro and rip all tracks as 1 complete track then transfer to said iPod.
