Massey Hall in Association with REMG Presents
SERGIO MENDES
Massey Hall proudly presents Sergio Mendes live in concert.
Recording music since 1961, Sergio Mendes was playing the legendary NYC jazz club, Birdland, with his band by 1962. After signing to A&M Records in 1966, he immediately became the biggest Brazilian artist of the decade. Considering that this was also the decade of the bossa nova and the huge hit, "Girl From Ipanema," this designation is particularly notable. A Brazilian counterpart to A&M label head Herb Alpert's own Tijuana Brass, Mendes' Brasil '66, reached the top of the Billboard singles charts with smashes like "The Look of Love" (which immediately became a perennial standard upon release), covers of "Scarborough Fair," and "The Fool on the Hill," and their signature song, "Mas Que Nada.". Mendes' albums kept charting throughout the '70s. In 1983, he scored one of the biggest hits of his career with the amazing "Never Going to Let You Go," which reached the top of the AC, Pop and Black Singles charts. In 1993 Mendes won a GRAMMYR Award for his album Brasileiro.
With his first album release in more than eight years, Sergio Mendes has teamed up with producer Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) to create Timeless. A modern reworking of Mendes' as well as Brazilian Classics this release blends the beautiful sounds of Brazilian music and compliments it with conscious hip hop sounds and soulful R&B. As a huge fan of Mendes, Will.i.am took the opportunity to produce this album and took it to the next level by recruiting a cast of artists to collaborate with the best selling Brazilian recording artist of all time. Collaborators include Q-Tip, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Jill Scott, Black Thought (The Roots), Erykah Badu and India.Arie to name a few.
Splitting the recording time between Brazil and The House of Blues in Encino, California gave all the artists involved an opportunity to fuse their creative talents by tying together two urban music cultures through the collaboration of contemporary and classic. With Mendes' trademark piano riffs and Will.i.am's beat-driven melodies, Timeless is a shining example of how music can cross borders, generations, and genres.
