Which experience to trust when making an objective decision on music?

Do you trust the first time you hear a track and your reactions then or your reactions after hearing a track many(5+) times?
For example there have been many tracks that I've disliked the first time I heard them but after hearing them many times I end up growing fond of them and enjoying them. Am I just a slave to repetition or is my first reaction the only true response? |

| Both, really. There's no pattern to what I like or don't like. Some tracks take longer to get in to but they're usually the ones I don't get tired of so easily... |

Exactly.
The tunes that my instant reaction is "Oh My God, this is AMAZING!" are generally the tunes that I lose interest in pretty quickly, and conversely the ones that take me a bit to gain interest in are usually the ones that stick around for quite some time. |

Yep, both. It took me forever to get into prog and other genres besides trance and they had to grow on me but now they're my favorite type of electronic. So it can be drawn that it takes a while to get into an entire genre, not just particular songs.
But it's always fun to hear something played for the first time and knowing right off the bat that you're going to love it. |

Music that I love needs multiple listens because the best songs work no matter how I feel- happy, depressed, mellow, or upbeat. So I listen in different moods to see if I really like it.
I probably only need 3 listens to know I love a song... I won't listen to a song I don't like more than twice. Sometimes I hope that I will grow to like a song, but listening to it a lot doesn't help. It only works if I find the precise mood that makes the song meaningful to me.
Occasionally, I sample a song for 20 seconds, say "I gotta have it," buy it and love it to death.
I don't know about the rest of you, but loving a song to death is a problem for me. I will love a song, play it over & over until it dies. Then it sits in iTunes as a song I loved so much, but can't bear to hear again.

Same here, however I was in to prog around 2000/2001, and then in 2002 I got more into epic trance. And now i'm back into prog, but because I was into epic trance, and still very much prefer melodic music, I tend to look for the more melodic, progressive stuff vs. the housier, more rhythmic or electro-infused progressive that is out there. The tune in my sig, "Divine" by Emrecan Cakir, is a perfect example of the sound I like nowadays. Usually stuff with a good melody doesn't take me long to get into, but stuff that is more subtle and or rhythmic or dark, takes me a little longer but I am still into it and like to put some of it in my sets to change things up...give it a little variety. |

| Depends a little on the occasion. Maybe i hear something i like in a liveset and i go omfg it r teh ch00n i die quick id, then when i get to listen to it again and make a judgement on the whole tune maybe it's not that intresting after all. On the other hand the exact contrary can occur, a tune that nearly doesn't spawn any reactions from me at all can end up becoming a favourite when i get to listen to it in peace a few times. That is the case with prog many times since it doesn't throw the elements in your face, you gotta listen to the whole tune and absorb the atmosphere gradually, get the feel for the whole progression of the tune. |

| Off the top of my head, I disliked Balance 005, Airdrawndagger and Involver after only one listen, but after 5+ listens I really really like 'em, especially Balance 005. Pure mint. :) |

| Most tracks I've ended up liking the most have had to grow on me as well. |
