Where mixing matters
Revival party building the buzz
Jul. 25, 2006. 07:30 AM

STAFF REPORTER
In the city of the black and the white, the red and the brown, the purple and yellow, does that one dance floor exist where the Johnny Cash groupies, the old school rockers and the hip hip-hoppers can bounce together?
Enter the Shuffle Party.
The buzz has been building ever since Toronto club-goers first met Shuffle at College St. nightclub Revival last summer — the party where music lovers basked in mixings from Ace of Base with Nirvana to Fatman Scoop with the Beatles, where musical curveballs can come in the form of a 1 a.m. slow dance to "Unchained Melody"(unhampered, uncut, and unchaperoned). It's a night of mixing — with an emphasis on a diverse lineup of tunes.
To get the night going, Revival linked up with a pair of Montreal-based DJs known in the mixing world as Team Canada. These self-proclaimed "mash-up kings" had been stacking genres — say, Pink Floyd over Notorious B.I.G. — together for a couple years.
Lo Falcioni, one of the night's organizers, describes the reaction of the first shuffle goers as an "excited whiplash." "Sometimes people were getting into this rhythm and then the DJ switches it up and you're like rrrrrr! Oooh! ...
"It was a breath of fresh air, I think, for everybody."
The result? "You see hip-hop people singing indie rock, the indie rock scene singing 50 Cent," D.J. Aaron Waisglass, a.k.a. Grandtheft, says in an interview from Montreal. "That's a special thing."
Three friends — Bryan Brock, Tyrone Edwards and Falcioni — designed the night. "We're all totally different," says Edwards — T-rexXx on the Shuffle scene.
Edwards, 25, plays host at the monthly event. In a city that prides itself on diversity, they noticed the clubbing scene was anything but. Between the hip-hop, top 40, punk, rock and the everything-in-between clubs, there was a segregation of party crowds.
"It's the only party we've been to where it includes everybody in the city ... here you have every colour, every background, every type of person getting along because it's all good music," Brock says.
"We're from Toronto. We're embracing the diversity of it. That's what Toronto is," Falcioni adds.
The party is for people who want to try something of everything. "Lots of people are going to be, `I'm too cool for that. I know what I like,'" Team Canada's Waisglass says. "So the people that are (at the Shuffle Party) — whether they are hip-hoppers or rockers or the type of girl that likes to go to Mod Club parties — they want to check out something different."
Revival is at 783 College St.
The next Shuffle Party is Friday.
