Perhaps....there's no telling what exactly was said. Whether it be something about him being a terrorist, something about his mother and sister...who knows. Who cares, really?
They are professional atheletes just like any NFL, MLB or NBA star and are expected to keep their cool in situations like that. Trash talking happens all the time and you don't *always* see guys beating the out of each other.
Maybe he deserved the Golden Ball for his performance UP TO that point, yes. I think FIFA is trying to set an example. I mean...for Christ's sake...about 2 BILLION people were watching that game! I think that without some sort of reaction for what he did, soccer itself suffers a blow.
Just my two cents worth...
Azzurri! Azzurri! Azzurri! :D |

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw him getting that red card. You are a professional on the field playing the last and biggest game of your life with couple of millions of people watching. Doesn't matter what Materazzi said, that shouldn't happen on the field |

Trey, some people take insults to their family very seriously. You can mock the guy's game but taking it to such personal level is excessive and unsportsmanly. People say words can't hurt but I doubt there are many people out there who won't hurt if someone said the right thing at them. Physical pain heals faster.
Besides, Zidane had not intention of hurting Materazzi. The heatbutt served as a check. Notice he heatbutted the chest and not at the face. He deserved the red card but he retained his dignity. |
