There was a TV right behind that Russian ref! Why didn't he look at it? That should have been an immediate red card. I can't believe how dirty the Portuguese were today. They were as dirty as complete e the Dutch were up front.

It all started with the foul on Ronaldo and the foul on Robben inside the box (the kick to the chest which should have been a penalty and a red card). However, the better team won. I hope this won't affect much the outcome of next match because England does not deserve to go through. They have played like for all their games. The only player who husles is Joe Cole (Ashely too).

Holland need to beef up and play more badass in four years time. Maybe recruit some Aussies :p

better team won? Holland had crazy chances all match! I don't know how Kuyt starts over RVN because he is complete e.

Portugal deserve to be without the players who were carded. YOu cannot act like that in a game and NOT have it affect your team. Figo should no way in hell be playing either. WHat a ing wanker. CLEAR VIDEO FOOTAGE FIFA! If you yellow card goalies for "time wasting", then you sure as hell better suspend morons for deliberate headbutts.

personally i like the idea of yellow carding players for time wasting.

Passing the ball around your area is fair play but taking your own sweet time to take goal kicks, throw ins, feigning injuries etc are unfair practices that need to be punished.

You got the lead now have the balls to hand on to it the way you got it.

I agree that players were getting away with too much time wasting before. But simply waiting 3 or 4 seconds for your players to get up the field so you can take a goal kick (as what happened with Robinson today) does not warrant a yellow card. Christ, if he does something like that again, he'd miss a potential semi final! How ludicrous. Goalies should be warned at least once verbally by the ref for supposed time wasting before they start flipping out the retarded cards.

yes, a very SERIOUS warning for a SERIOUS offence. Cards are busted out far too often that they've lost of a lot of their impact.

This was the best game yet for the World Cup '06 so far. You could tell both teams wanted it really bad. Also, I was impressed by the high level of 'technical feet' of the Hollanders. In the end, through all the foul turmoil, which added to the excitement, Portugal managed a beautiful goal over Holland. What an exciting game!

this is TRANCEaddict and a team that does that must be condoned over here.

True, but a porkchop put this site together - it goes hand in hand ;)

Figo was wrong for the headbutt...but I don't know how that all got so heated? From the replays the Holland player pushed him, then Figo slapped his hand away and then the headbutt came..

I lol'ed when I read this in some article:
quote:
Worst acting: Figo gives Van Bommel a lame head-butt, which Van Bommel initially barely noticed, but seconds later he seems to realize that could mean a red card for Figo so he goes down theatrically, clutching his face as if his jaw fell off.

Best acting: Boulahrouz bullies Figo for the ball and his elbow gets in Figo's face in the heat of the chase. Figo goes down as if gunned down by elite commandos. His reward: A sent-off for the best Dutch defender.

As for Ronaldo and the crying - I could understand you guys making fun of him if it was because of pain from the injury, but he was just emotional at not being able to stay in the game.

Meh, that ref was card happy...and the game could have gone either way as Holland had some good chances.

Also agree 100% that at around the 74 minute mark is where control was completely lost - said better here:

quote:
And for a while things were end-to-end and the action was fierce. A break in the action was required, however, after Ricardo got injured making a save.

The stop in action didn't occur right then, though, as perhaps it should have. Instead, Ivanov allowed the Portuguese to try to counter-attack, only blowing his whistle to stop the play when Deco seemed ready to run through the entire Dutch defense who weren't sure why the referee had continued with the man down at the other end.

Now is where things take an ugly unsporting turn and I think Ivanov is complicit in the breakdown here. For as we all know, the proper restart for situation like this is a drop ball, but the unwritten rule is that the team who possessed the ball prior to the stoppage for injury should have the ball returned to them by their opponents.

There even seemed to be some confusion on this right before the drop ball as Figo let his opponents have it, expecting that they would then send it deep either to Ricardo over over the end line. That did not happen, however, and Johnny Heitinga began to race up the field with ball into the Portuguese end.

Had I been the man in the middle, I would've blown my whistle and insisted that the drop ball be taken again and that the Dutch players return it to the other side. Anybody above the age of twelve knows that this is just how it's done. And if they don't know that, then it's the referee's job to inform them about this bit of sportsmanship that you won't find in any rulebook.

Rightfully pissed about what was an obvious injustice and disgraceful act by the Dutch player, Deco came in with a heavy, reckless, slide tackle to take out Heitinga. Normally, a player might be sent off for what Deco did, but probably because he was more-or-less justified in doing this as a result of Ivanov's incompetence, only a yellow card was issued.
