Cool EQ trick for making a phatter track

When mixing we EQ out frequencies from sounds that compete with other sounds. for instance, we run a high-pass filter on a lead synth to avoid covering up the bass and kick. This leaves the lead synth sounding thin when soloed, but fine in the mix. This is great for muti-timberal parts, but what about the break where you can only hear the lead?
Simple solution:
Clone the lead track, leave one with the EQ filtering out the bass and one without an EQ. Cut it up so only the one without the EQ is playing during the break and the other is playing with the muti-timberal part.
I recently started experimenting with this and the results are great! Before, I would just EQ out a track and forget about it, now, I only use EQ for when the part is in an overall mix. |

| welcome to automation :) |

| Wow...I've never even thought about that before lol. My automations tend to be limited to filter freq, chan volume, on/off switches, and that's pretty much it. I think I have a lot more experimenting to do. |

Yeah it's just a bit of trial and error and common sense really! |

| It all depends on your song because if you play a raw lead during a solo then when the track kicks in you filter it it may sound duller then it did during the break. Its a good hint but i guess alot of people would already be well aware of automation :D . |

or just use a HPF and automate the frequency. |

| what about to just automate bypass for EQ or HP filter in your breakdown? The method you describe doesn't always work, but automation is the easiest way... |
