Mylo Chicago Review

jrock2468
This post will be mostly a review of Mylo, but I'd love to hear from those of you that went to Mazi, too.

First:

Some friends and I started to go to Mazi @ Soundbar instead of Mylo since it's walking distance from my apartment and we were supposedly on a no cover list. We rolled up to Soundbar about 12:30, and the door guys were being idiots about the list, saying we were on one that's only good until 11pm. :conf: This turned out to be the best turn of fate for my nights out this year so far.

I hate the way Soundbar does lists at the door. I used to give away spots through Pure and Relode for a show I do on WNUR, but they are SO unreliable. 1/3 times they would screw it up after confirming names I gave them for the night. I would end up getting calls the next week about how listeners of the show had trouble at the door WAY more often than I should have. Needless to say, I tend to not give away tix for Pure shows to strangers anymore if they are available since it tended to end in trouble, which is embarrassing.

Friends and I did the list through that AMPProd message board this week. Had door trouble, so we said "Screw it, let's go to Smartbar."

Onto Mylo:

We shelled out the cover and got into Smartbar 20 minutes after Mylo was into his set. All I can say about Smartbar's soundsystem is "Hot damn." :eyes: Only other time I've been to Smartbar since the new soundsystem was installed was for James Lauer's Sunday nights. But it felt like they had speakers under the dance floor, which was awesome (I didn't notice that on Sunday nights). There weren't any fog or smoke machines, either, which I find get pretty annoying at Soundbar and Vision. Instead, they had several big fans to cool people off. Good move, Smartbar. Getting to a bar was no problem at any point in the night, and there were several places to sit down and rest your feet.

Mylo's set kicked ass. Hands down better than any Friday at Soundbar or Saturday at Vision that I've been to this year so far. When I mix, I use mostly CDJs, Ableton, and vinyl less and less. Mylo reminded me just how cool it is when a DJ uses strictly vinyl (only other DJ I've seen use mostly vinyl this year was Carl Cox).

Mylo's choice of tunes kept a packed dancefloor going all night. There were serveral of his original tracks and remixes, though he didn't dwell on them. For the most part, he played some of the dirtiest, most fun, and danceable Electo/Techno/Funky House I've heard. He kept the mixing technique between tracks varied and they sounded really good to me.

When the venue was closing down, he came on for an encore. You could clearly see Mylo begging the Smartbar guy if he could do "One more song, just one more song". The Smartbar guy finally said alright. Mylo did two songs. I'd REALLY like to know what the first one of these two was. It had some really unique sounds and was insanely cool, whatever it was. The last song was one of his tracks; "In My Arms" if I remember correctly.

Bottom line: I'm definitely going to hit up more nights at Smartbar. For not being on a list that night, the cover wasn't outrageous for someone like Mylo. Drink prices aren't as bad as Soundbar / Vision, and the Soundsystem flat out rocks. Easily one of the best nights out for me this year, so far.

Mylo has set a pretty high bar for Holden, this weekend. :gsmile:

Mylo was incredible. Every track kept the crowd absorbed in the groove and the whole night was just amazing and full of energy. Incredible. Smartbar has a vibe few other places have. It does feel like the speakers are under the floor - I think it's the way they have the subs setup that does it. Some monger subs all over the place and all they produce is sub-bass... the kind of bass you only feel. And those are what make it seem like the floor is moving with the bass. It's an excellant feeling, lol. Agree, their sound system is stellar - just puts the music right in your face, up front and to the point, where it belongs. This ain't no lounge.

Obligatory teaser pic, will post the rest later.

I concur with the positive reviews. Absolutely great set and a great party all around. I'd say that's the best show I've been to at smart bar yet, definitely beat out some of kaskades sets that Ive seen there.

I too have had my share of issues w/ the Sound-Bar door people. They have some snooty elitist -don't-stink attitude that doesn't belong in Chicago. :lame:
