What is this that I am listening to? Where did it originate, where is it popular, and who are some key artists?

The modern psychedelic sound originated on the island of Goa in India. While progressive rockers were visiting the land of India and infusing their music with phrygian scales and Hindu mysticism, and dropping acid for inspiration, there was another group doing the exact same thing: Trance artists. Producers and DJs sampled early trance and EBM, added a phrygian scale or two, then filled their music to the brim with sci-fi movie quotes, 303 squelches, bandpass croaks and bubbly effects. The hippies loved the , and Goa was born.
The sounds of Goa were quickly picked up by Israeli producers, who sort of "popified" the whole thing. The stuff was still pretty inaccessible, but moreso than what was to come.
Somewhere along the line, Goa threw the Hindu mysticism away and just called itself psychedelic trance. Not much else changed in the interim, aside from the fact that the hippies stopped listening to it. It continues to have popularity in Israel to this day, I believe.
Artists to look for: Astral Projection, Astrix, Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen, Cygnus X, Man With No Name, Cass & Slide, Atmos, and my current personal favorit, Doof. |

It originated in goa in the early 90s, hence the name. Popular all over the world particularly in India, Israel, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, France, UK and Scandanavia.
Early pioneers included Astral Projection, X Dream, Man with no name, Hallucinogen, Etnica, KoxBox, HuxFlux, Shiva Chandra, Doof.
Current acts must number in the hundreds. Theres about half a dozen differnt sub genres currently each with their own top artists so your really going to have to start digging. I'd suggest checking out Protoculture, Audiotec, Bizarre Contact, Xerox & Illumination for starters. |

psy trance is basically the groove within the regular trance we listen to, extracted and produced as that groove, not as music with the internal groove.
Its the music you hear and dance on when you have PSY type thought processes.
truth.
check out X-Dream, they are beyond psy, breaking in to a new area of tekno, which hasnt been touched in years.
I also would say check out Kox Box, Deedrah, Hujaboy, Rinkadink, GMS, Neuromotor, Fungus Funk, Parasense, Sub 6, Xerox, Jaia, psysex and on and on and on
See if you can download any Kontakt too :P Most psychedelic stuff, maybe ever. Not the Kontakt that did the cheese trance remixes, youll know it when you hear it.
yahel is pretty cheesy, not just my opinion :P |
