Ok... phew... after an insane couple of days here are the pictars + review from me:

The night itself was a ton of fun, I personally felt like my mixing was better (Or at least VERY consistent) than it has been at a few of my gigs lately, the setup was great, and Dustin really played well with me, his track selection was definitely choice. Unfortunately he also got a lil drunk by the end of the night and accidentally killed the ONE track I had been waiting all night to drop, and at the worst possible time. Just as the intro was finished and the first break hit, with the house about as packed as it was the entire night, Dustin hit the "cue" button on the playing CDJ and just cut all music to the room. Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled. Beyond that, once he got a little bit more inebriated, he also decided to start playing with the EFX which he really didn't have any experience on, and it KILLED a couple of my mixes that would have been mint... Again, I was disappointed, but moved on.
Unfortunately, I also think this is the last time I will be playing at Ravens. The management/promotion has been less than stellar (I'm out $280 on promotion materials I was never compensated for), and the appreciation for our work is lacking incredibly. We went down on Friday night to kind of support the club and check out some other DJ's and there was a total of 6 people in the lounge. Saturday, we had at least 40 (Capacity in the lounge is only around 80) that were there just for US, not to mention the random stragglers who popped in, and the owners just acted like it was expected of us and that we really didn't do anything at all for them when in reality, the ONLY reason the bar made any money was because of my promotion (I say "my" because not even one of the other DJ's playing, either of the owners, or the "promoter" did anything to promote the event). In their eyes, it seems as though they'd rather have psytrance and hardstyle DJ's because that's what they prefer to listen to, even though the DJ's they bring in inevitably end up playing to empty rooms. It's funny, I should have seen it coming a mile away when the first time I went to play one of the owners asked me what I played, and when I replied with progressive/house music the only response I got was "Oh, ok... We actually just asked the previous house resident to leave because we are sick of house music."
It's sad, the place really has potential to be a cool little spot, but mismanagement and a lack of appreciation for what are essentially unpaid employees bringing them business really just rub me the wrong way... And I'm not ranting here because I want to get "paid more" or at all for that matter, but not having any support from the people who you are essentially paying the bills for really just made me feel let down, which hurts even more because there are NO clubs really in this area that I can try to get into and I really thought that perhaps this would be a place where I could carve out my own little niche... C'est La Vie I guess...
/whiny rant... sorry to any of you who actually read that, I needed to get it off my chest. |

I hear ya rob... We took a hit this past weekend with two of our nights being shut down - Monday's and Saturday's. Our Friday nights are stronger than ever and we have some massive shows non-stop coming up but our beloved local nights, the true TC nights got the lid. Euphoria was a fun place for a three room night and was a great way to showcase lots of locals but unfortunately it wasn't doin it for the owner. Plus our monday's got the lid all the sudden due to the place closing. Sad but I can't wait to see what becomes of those nights.... Hopefully something works out for ya soon rob...
*raises glass to RJT*

it is pretty discouraging to see someone work so hard at something, watching them put all their energy and drive into it, and then to see them get such a weak response in return... and i'm not talking about the crowd. Rob ing filled that place on saturday night. we were in there on friday night and there were maybe 6 or 7 people there, but saturday we had lots of people come from all over - Stevens Point, Appleton, i drove up from Waukesha - all there to support Rob. but after the night was over i couldn't help but think that it felt like an annoying high school group project, where you get stuck with a bunch of lazy people in your group... and saturday night it just seemed like Rob played the part of the kid who did all the dirty work and pulled everyone elses weight.
granted, it was still a sick night. Rob's set was amazing, his mixing was spot-on all night, he dropped lots of sick tracks (it's too bad Dustin killed that Nick K track though), and he is by far one of the most fun DJs to watch (and i'm not just saying that 'cause he's my boyfriend and it gives me a turn on, lol)... it just sucks to see the huge difference between the vibe we get when Rob plays a house party by himself, versus playing out at a club where you have other DJs and club owners and whatnot to deal with. i think the business aspect of playing at clubs kills such a huge aspect of the vibe - unless of course everyone is giving it 100%.
but the real point i want to make... Rob Turner is my favorite DJ in the whole wide world. :D and you have my support all the way babe! |

Thank you so much, you know how much that means to me (Especially with all the BS of the last few days)... :happy2:
@ Dan: I really hope you guys get things back on track up there. It was really looking like you guys were making a lot of progress up there, so I hope you can continue rocking the Twin Cities proper as often as possible! I've got a lot of faith in you and Tyler to take over that city in the next couple of years... And maybe then you guys can have me up there so I can deal with friends as opposed to... well whatever it is that's going on now... |
